The Fairmont Hotel and Universal Grammar cordially invite to the next installment of the Live @ The Pagoda Fall Music Series. On Wednesday, December 7th, 2011, join us for an evening of next level Jazz performance with the vocals of José James and his equally matched quartet at the intimate room in downtown San José known as The Pagoda.

Born and raised in Minneapolis, José James came of age with the sounds of Prince, hip-hop and Modern jazz, singing jazz standards, originals, and the works of John Coltrane with his quartet throughout the Twin Cites. Since his 2008 debut album, “The Dreamer” he has had his share of international critical success. Released on international tastemaker DJ Giles Peterson’s Brownswood Recordings label, James has performed at venues such as the North Sea Jazz Festival, Billboard Live Tokyo, The Hermitage Museum, Central Park’s Summerstage. His 2010 release on Impulse! “For all We Know” put him in premier concert halls L’Olympia, De Roma, and Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola and Cotton Club Tokyo and gained him the Edison Award and L’Académie du Jazz Grand Prix for best Vocal Jazz Album of 2010. Drawing upon diverse influences such as Freestyle Fellowship and Rahsaan Roland Kirk – James has also explored the worldwide underground working with producers Flying Lotus, Moodymann, Taylor McFerrin, and DJ Mitsu the Beats and pushing his band by covering dubstep pioneer Benga’s “Emotions”. Quite simply, José James is one of the best voices of our generation making music.

This Saturday the Live @ The Pagoda concert series continues with After Hours. Jazz musicians have traditionally used “after hours” gigs to push the boundaries of the art form. This year’s collaboration between the Summer Fest and Universal Grammar presents an eclectic mix of Jazz, Soul, Funk, Hip Hop, Electronic and Latin grooves at The Fairmont’s Pagoda Restaurant from late evening until the wee hours.

Teeko (4OneFunk/F.A.M.E.) will be in the house this Saturday rocking live for us all!

After receiving recognition and championship awards in worldwide DJ competitions (including DMC, ITF and Guitar Center Championships), he toured from coast to coast and collaborated with some of jazz’s finest musicians: members of the Charlie Hunter Quartet and John Scofield Trio. Following an energetic performance in a San Francisco jazz club, audience member and legendary saxophonist Ravi Coltrane requested an encore performance. Teeko’s performances are frequently met with such requests as his style is often described as truly original and refreshing, receiving high respects from the best in Hip-Hop, Jazz and everything in between. Teeko exhibits his mastery of turntable production in his debut album, “My SoundStation,” (2006) which exposes his eclectic musical style and creativity as a composer. The widely anticipated album ranked number one on several of the College Music Journal’s Top 10 lists for months after its release in fall 2006. He was recognized soon after the album’s debut for his
excellence in production with the Milestones Innovative Producer’s Award given by the world-renowned Berklee School of Music in Boston. He has most recently displayed his innovation and creativity as a collaborator on the development of the new Vestax turntable, the Controller One—the first turntable engineered to be a musical instrument.

‘Art of Blending’ is directed by acclaimed filmmaker Thibaut De Longeville, best known for his documentary about sneaker culture, ‘Just For Kicks.’
