On Thursday, June 2nd, 2011, Peek Gallery in association with Noise Pop proudly presents an exclusive photo gallery IF IT FITS IN THE BACKPACK…10 Years On the Road with MOCHILLA. Between B+ and Coleman, Mochilla’s co-founders, the two have photographed some of music’s biggest icons, including Eminem, Lauryn Hill, Black Eyed Peas, DJ Shadow, MF Doom, Dilated Peoples, Blackalicious, David Axelrod, Mulatu Astatke, J.Dilla, EPMD, Snoop Dogg, Black Star (Mos Def & Talib Kweli), Damian Marley, Nas, A Tribe Called Quest, Madlib, Jay Electronica, and many others. Outside of their photography work, Mochilla developed into a full service production company, producing 3 groundbreaking music films which include KEEPINTIME, BRASILINTIME, and TIMELESS, all exploring the connection between Jazz/Soul/Funk/Brasilian music and the latter generation of DJs and producers who were so influenced by the previous generation’s music and aesthetic. Recent video projects include Eric Coleman’s video work w/ Jay Electronica in South Africa; B+’s travels w/ Nas & Damian Marley in Jamaica; an interview with the legendary Jose Maria “Curro” Fuentes (producer of some of Colombia’s most important musicians and orchestras on his own Discos Curro imprint); and their combined work on Banksy’s film, “Exit Through The Gift Shop.”

The June 2nd, 2011 grand opening of IF IT FITS IN THE BACKPACK…10 Years On the Road with MOCHILLA will feature work made under the Mochilla aegis over the last 10 years, showcasing their cultural imprint on music from all over the world and their brilliant execution as photographers and videographers.

Show of “Nosaj Thing & Aalto” at Lunchmeat Festival 2010 hold in MeetFactory = the best club and art space in Prague / Czech republic.

I remember when our very own Mark PLSTK showed me Romain Tardy alias Aalto & I flipped my lid. I then showed $ & he too flipped his lid, then we Blind I’ed that batch & y’all flipped your lid. Case n point… this is some more head flippage. Aalto spent 14 days before the performance in the first Lunchmeat’s art residency. He prepared the stage design and unique visual show for Nosaj Thing. Small team of carpenters helped him to construct the wooden base, which was coveder by more than 500 polystyrene triangles. I don’t know how far we reach outside of the US but if you are in the hood… then hit the jump to go to the next one!

Alright, this one may seem a bit biased to some who know me personally but…fuck it I don’t care because this shit is dope anyway. My mans an nem Kris Mac sent me this promo vid for his art show he’s been working on literally for about 8 years now (no…I’m not kidding lol) and to be honest with you…I’m completely blown away. Kris’ hustle and focus is unlike anyone else that I know. Matter of fact, there’s only one other person who’s hustle matches up, but his name is Mac too…so maybe its just a Mac thing. But I digress, watch the video, be amazed, and keep yourself in tune to what’s going on in Chicago so you’ll be hip to “Beyond a Reasonable Doubt” when it comes to fruition. Oh and big shouts to the homie Raphael over at Endangered Peace for another qua-la-tee video.

Artists create original designs inspired by the legacy of J Dilla and register by uploading their artwork to www.art4dilla.com. Users vote on the artist’s work to choose the winner. The winning design will be produced as a poster and limited edition Giclee print series signed by the artist and J Dilla’s mother, Ma Dukes. Proceeds will be donated to the J Dilla Foundation and fund their ongoing programs.

The word “foundation” has several meanings. A person lays the foundation for a successful life and career through focus, hard work, and (most of all) by never losing sight of how his public and private efforts will influence the world around him. It is also the familiar term for any established agency that has as its mission a firm commitment to improve the lives of others. It is fitting, therefore, that the J. Dilla Foundation combines these two definitions perfectly and allows the legacy of one man’s art to be the inspirational force in other people’s lives.

The “So Far To Go” International J Dilla Art Contest is organized by La Famiglia Magazine and 323East Gallery on the behalf of Ma Dukes and the J Dilla Foundation. Sponsors include Fat Beats, Fusicology, Crewest, 5e Gallery, RX Fresh, Ironlak, Bombing Science and Ohm Creative Group.
