Looks like we got a new trend on our hands this summer. Fuck Colt 45, St. Ides is for the kids! All jokes aside, St. Ides put together a super thorough promotional campaign back in the day with Dr. Dre to push their malt liquor sales to the then-blossoming hip-hop crowd. Looking back on it philosophically, it was a total brainwashing tool to get inner-city youth to drink and drink heavy, but at least some good ass music came out of it, right? I suppose we’ll all have our own opinions on that, but while you think about it, check out Eric B. & Rakim on Real Men Drink (lol @ that song title, there’s many more like it on this comp) and indulge in that O.E.! Lol!

WU-TANG CLAN’S DEMO TAPE (1992)

When it comes to the children, Wu Tang is for the children. Puffy is good, but Wu-Tang is the best. The Wu Tang Clan was very influential on my personal musical maturation and that moment at the Grammy Awards when ODB spoke so profoundly is part of the reason why this site is called Blind I For The Kids. Amidst all the current fuckery going on with WTC/Slaughterhouse beefs and what not, I find it important to never forget how strong the Wu was in their collective prime. This gem is their official demo tape from 1992, as gritty as you probably expect, and definitely one to put in your archives for when your kids revert to thinking Wu Tang is a Chinese orange drink. So without further ado, check out this rare joint “Cuttin Headz” and indulge thine self.

The world moves faster than ever these days, and even in the digital age, things can always be counted on to go in cycles.  Despite all of the advances in computer recording technology, home studios, and electronic instruments, there is a flourishing interest in analog recording techniques and in recreating the mood and sound of vintage soul records.  With one foot in the past but their eyes firmly set on the future, El Michels Affair are among the leaders of a resurgent funk & soul movement from New York City that’s sweeping both the music community and the charts.

Led by saxophonist/organist Leon Michels and producer/engineer Jeff Silverman, El Michels Affair began as a loose collaboration of session musicians (including members of top-selling acts Sharon Jones & the Dap Kings, The Budos Band, and Antibalas) that looked to blend some of the vibrant quality of soundtrack records with the recording aesthetic of early reggae, and the rawness of 60′s rock–they called it ‘Cinematic Soul.’  This delicate balance was evident on their 2005 debut album Sounding Out the City, which earned critical acclaim and acted as the inaugural full-length release for Michels and Silverman’s burgeoning label Truth & Soul (also the moniker for the duo as a production team).

One of the best scenes in movie history IMO. Wu Tang’s RZA & GZA encounter Bill Murrary hiding out as a waiter in a dinner. If you have yet to see the film Coffee & Cigarettes (2003), I highly recommend you Netflix it now!
