It’s been almost over a year already and we still miss him…..

The Beat Junkies, with the support of VTech, threw a tribute to our dear friend, the late great Grandmaster Roc Raida of the X-Ecutioners this past September. The actual event was exactly a year after the date he was buried: Sept 24th, 2009. We were able to have some members of the X-Ecutioners participate in the event, as well as having Roc Raida’s family in the house. His daughter DJ NyRaida performed a set in tribute to her father.

If you were in LA for this event, you were able to witness something very magical. And for those who didn’t get to experience it, and those who want to relive it, we present this video. Mochilla sat with the Junkies and X-Ecutioners and tried to remember Raida not in a sad way but in a celebratory way.

As MF Grimm says “Anyone who knows Raida knows that the energy that he possessed he was able to transfer to you – and once he did nobody could tell you anything…”

Bilal is incredible. Anything he sings turns into gold.  Lately we’ve seen footage of him covering artists from all genres at his hows. This one really stands out because of the vast  live instrumentation (violins etc.) and the improv, organic feel you get watching them play together. It’s a beautiful song already, but Bilal’s imprint on a classic Marley song is delightful. Enjoy. Shouts to VTech.

Here is some footage from the recent Quadron show put on by VTech and FreshSelects for their summer series. This was the Denmark duo’s Portland debut, and as usual they put on a stellar performance. Looking forward to their next album via Plug Research. Shouts to Kenny Fresh.

The homie Kenny Fresh of Fresh Selects did it again @ The Fix! This time around linking up with our good friends over @ VTech to bring the city of Portland a dynamic performance from our homies Keys N Krates! Directed by Paulius Kontijevas of NMDZ.

Arthur Verocai is a mysterious figure even in his native Brasil.  He has composed and arranged for such giants as Jorge Ben, Gal Costa and Leny Andrade.  But hip hop heads know him for his often sampled (see Ludacris, MF Doom and Little Brother) self-titled solo album.  The album came out at the height of the Brasilian dictatorship and was a commercial failure.  His performance of this seminal 1972 record complete brought the sold out crowd at the Luckman Theater to a stand still.  According to Verocai, he had never played the record “alive or dead!”  His delight at the opportunity to play this music in it’s complete form can be seen on the Timeless DVD box set.

This song, “Flying to LA” was written specifically for the concert at the Luckman.  It starts with open drums by Mamao from the famed Brasilian trio Azymuth, and then goes on a beautiful harmonic journey.  Enjoy, share and turn it up.

Spotted at VTech

I had the pleasure of catching this performance during CMJ week in NYC. Bilal was one of the most anticipated artists to hit the stage that night and as usual he tore it down. “Levels” is from his forthcoming album via Plug Research. I love the way it begins.
