DUDLEY AND GEORGIA – PERFECT (GET A TASTE)

Once in a while, VTech finds itself collaborating with a special group of musicians, singers, and DJs.  In the past we’ve worked with such greats as Mulatu Astatke, Quantic, Arthur Verocai, DJ Nuts, Miguel Atwood-Ferguson, and more.  This time around, it’s somewhat of a family affair.  VTech will be releasing exclusive new material from Dudley Perkins and Georgia Ann Muldrow’s project which features a compilation of up and coming artists on the label “Someothership Connect.”  Most of the artists are self-produced, with Georgia at the helm producing the beats and Dudley MCing some of the songs.  With the first download, “Perfect (Git a Taste),” Dudley and Georgia do what they do best, making music you can’t help but listen to over and over again.
Download and turn it up.  And don’t worry, there’s plenty more where that came from.

ONE NIGHT IN VEGAS

Tonight, on the 14th anniversary of Tupac’s murder, ESPN will premiere Reggie Rock Bythewood’s new documentary One Night In Vegas. Part of the “30 for 30″ documentary series, the film take a look at the friendship between ‘Pac and Mike Tyson, as well as the events of that night that saw the boxer’s final championship win and the iconic rapper’s slaying.

Recently, I had the opportunity to chat with Bythewood about the film and the controversial icons:

One night, Mike was going in to the Palladium (night club) in Hollywood. And he sees this little skinny guy fighting with the bouncers, who don’t want to let him in because of how he was dressed. He tells them “Hey, let the little guy in” and it was ‘Pac. That’s where their friendship started. The night before the big fight, ‘Pac was in the studio recording a song for Mike’s entrance in to the ring.

FAT BEATS IN-STORE PERFORMANCE SCHEDULES

Once we all got word that Fat Beats would be closing down nationally, there were definitely mixed emotions about the vinyl staple ending its run. However, Fat Beats has big plans to go out with a bang by hosting a series of in-store performances at its NY and Los Angeles Locations. See below for details:

(August 30, 2010 – Brooklyn, NY) After announcing the closing of their New York and Los Angeles locations, Fat Beats is excited to present a send-off worthy of their hip-hop legacy. A week-long series of in-store performances and music industry panels at both stores will allow the music community to not only learn about the history of Fat Beats and what the future of the music industry holds, but to also celebrate the legacy of one of the strongest music brands in the company of their favorite artists. These week-long in-stores are sure to go down in hip-hop and New York history. Everyone is welcome to come and all events are free.

Today marks the official start of the week-long in-stores for the New York location. This location will host artist perfomances every day this week from 4-9pm until it closes its doors for the final time on Saturday, September 4th, 2010. Additionally, both locations will be selling limited edition commemorative t-shirts, as well as discounted music and merchandise

MY MIC SOUNDS NICE: A TRUTH ABOUT WOMEN IN HIP-HOP

A couple weeks ago, I attended a screening for BET’s first ever original music documentary, “My Mic Sounds Nice: A Truth About Women In Hip-Hop“. Directed by Ava DuVernay, the film takes a loving, yet critical look at the history of sisters in Rap music. It is equal parts celebration of pioneers and those carrying the torch and lamentation over the lack of estrogen in today’s Hip-Hop spaces.

Take a peek at the trailer:

BET Videos

Commentary is provided primarily by woman rappers, including MC Lyte, YoYo, Trina, Salt n’ Pepa, The Lady of Rage, Diamond, Eve, Missy, etc. Other heads weighing in include Kevin Lyles, Joan Morgan, Questlove, Glennisha Morgan of The Fembassy and Russell Simmons. I was really excited to hear the thoughts Jean Grae, Tiye Pheonix and a few other female rappers who aren’t as familiar to the BET audience (there is a great independent artist roll-call at the end as well).

ANOTHER PART OF MJ: MICHAEL JACKSON REMAKES, REMIXES & RE-EDITS VOL 1 & 2 [REPOST]

In celebration of the birthday of Michael Jackson , I decided to repost this .. don’t sleep!!
Our Peoples over at illvibe are always keeping it fresh. Dj lil’ Dave is really putting it down with the BEST MICHAEL JACKSON TRIBUTE MIX HANDS DOWN…Yeah i said it! I’ve heard a lot of MJ mixes and i like “Another part of MJ: Michael Jackson Remakes, Remixes & Re-Edits ” the most. What’s fresh about it is that instead of playing all the obvious classics we all know and love, he pulled together all the remixes, remakes, re-redits, b-sides, and demos he could find. The result is a mix of hiphop, reggae, house, samba, boogie, and of course some soul.

I was juiced in search of the track listing to find out there was another mix he put out in the anniversary of the Late Great King!
Lil’ Dave presents “Another Part Of MJ Vol.2:
