If you’re a fan of Brooklyn-based group The Stuyvesants, then chances are you’re familiar with Darien Birks a.k.a. Flwrpt. Every now and then he drops these really cool mixes with rare gems and impeccable song choices! Sample Food Vol. 2 kicks off appropriately with the Otis Redding classic “Try A Little Tenderness” which Watch The Throne has recently revived. When I heard about the passing of the legendary Gil Scott-Heron, I decided that it was time  for another installment of my old-school Innervisions compilations. I grew up in a musical house with a father who collects records. As a kid and even now, the minute you walk into my parents’ house you will be greeted with a stereo blasting the classics. I have a fond appreciation for all of it. Here are some songs that put me in a nostalgic space mixed with some newer music that complements it well. I’m kind of in l-o-v-e with this playlist. Enjoy.

RAPHAEL SAADIQ-IT’S A SHAME (SPINNERS COVER)

I love the work Raphael Saadiq does for his solo projects as well as for other artists. In my opinion, his last album The Way I See It, was heavily slept on, but I thought he  successfully blended that old soul vibe into a modern album.  It felt polished and classy.  This Spinners song is one of my favorites (come on, Stevie co-wrote it), so I was curious to see how his version would sound. Saadiq got with Levi’s Pioneer Sessions for the remake and this video shows him recording and discussing the song.What do you think?
