I turn 25 on Saturday, and to echo my current musical mood I decided to make this month’s Blind I Says GO! all about the raps! Well, mostly about the raps. Amidst songs featuring Lupe Fiasco, Madlib, Kidz In The Hall, Curren$y, Mikkey Halsted, Co$$, Blu, Styles P, Freddie Gibbs, Kendrick Lamar, Gucci Mane, Tabi Bonney, Dom Kennedy, Gilbere Forté, Pac Div, Stalley, and Martin & Malcolm, there’s a bit of soul in this mix compliments of Spree Wilson, Esthero, and some unreleased EARLY production from Chad Hugo and Pharrell Williams of The Neptunes for a R&B singer named Mike E. who was produced by Teddy Riley back when the Neptunes duo was ghost-producing for the legend. Funny story: while in NYC for this year’s CMJ Music Marathon, I visited the DD172 space and ran into Stalley, who conveniently gave all in attendance a sneak preview of some of his recent work with Columbus, OH native Rashad Thomas for Stalley‘s upcoming LP Lincoln Way Nights (Intelligent Trunk Music). The title fits perfectly, as this is the type of vibe you’d ride around to in a big boy Cadillac. Stalley‘s lyrics provide the picture-painting precision necessary to bring out the music’s soulful intensity. Check out the first single, “Hercules” and partake!
