I had the pleasure of hosting a show with this lovely lady and I seriously think she’s hitting some home runs with her style, voice, and message. Last year she dropped her EP From Her Eyes, collection of cover songs that were originally made by men. Through her gentle voice and stylistic nuances the listener forgets the lines from the commercial releases and her own variations. I love it. MELANIE FIONA
Melanie Fiona is a bright, young R&B artist and Kanye West protégé from Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Born Melanie Hall, the singer grew up in inner-city Toronto to Guayanese parents. Fiona developed a passion for music at an early age, influenced by groups and artists such as the Ronettes and Whitney Houston. It’s no surprise, then, that she offers a throwback retro sound to complement her immaculate voice. Though she has been active in the music industry since 2002, her first recorded release came with Reggae Gold 2008, in the form of the track “Somebody Come Get Me.” The track was instantly acclaimed as a highlight, as well as a fan favorite on the album, and it helped her get signed to Universal Motown. Fiona released her debut single, “Give It to Me Right,” which samples “Time of the Season” by the Zombies. Fiona’s melismatic and dynamic vocal propelled the single to the Top 20 on the Canadian Hot 100, in addition to charting on the ~Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop songs chart. Her debut album, The Bridge, was released in the fall of 2009, and was a Top 25 album on the Canadian Album Chart. The album which was spearheaded by Andrea Martin, and its lead single also charted in the U.K. and Italy. She is also known for being the opening act on Kanye West’s European tour in 2008, which is notable because she hadn’t even released an album at the time of the tour.

MARSHA AMBROSUIS
Shortly after the end of her gold-selling R&B act Floetry, singer, songwriter, and producer Marsha Ambrosius — whose biggest claim to fame as a writer is Michael Jackson’s Top 20 hit “Butterflies” — signed with Dr. Dre’s Aftermath label. Nothing came from the short-lived alliance. However, Ambrosius eventually signed with J Records, where she finally released her first official solo album — Late Nights & Early Mornings — in 2011. While in creative limbo, she was nonetheless active, issuing a handful of mixtapes and collaborating with Alicia Keys (“Go Ahead”), Mario (“Why”), Jazmine Sullivan (“Music [All I Need]”), Jamie Foxx (“Freak’in Me”), and Wale (“Diary”)

The MySpace Soul Collection

We here at Blind I take pride in bringing you the freshest shit on the planet. If it aint dope it aint fresh and if it aint fresh it aint us. Well I just happened to put together a lil collection that brings you the freshest Soul music that I found on MySpace. By no means is this the “best of” nor a definitive collection but it fa sho knocks. The collection contains a couple tracks from artists that I think should get some knock. I have been playing it non stop for the past couple weeks and let me tell ya it dont get old and you wont skip any tracks. Keep in mind that some artists post rough versions of their songs on their myspace so these songs may not be in their final stage and my not sound like this if and when it gets released. Some of these artists are not signed yet and some have just been signed. When you hear their music you’ll know why as it speaks for itself. This just goes to show how Da Undaground is alive and well.. All of these artists have star power and if I can bring them to the bay to do a show for us I think that’ll be too fresh. I appreciate the love and feedback on Good Morning. When it comes to these compilations, I try to pick songs that are bit off the radar or lost in the throwback vault so you don’t get a slew of Mp3s that you already play everyday. I want it to be a grab bag of sorts, unpredictable and refreshing. Clearly I have quite the library so I hit you as I see fit from here on out! Here’s a bevy of tunes for the lover in you since it’s February. I have a soul comp en route for the end of the month with nothing but pure R&B, but I mixed this up a bit. What kind of lover are you? Street? Soul? Sultry? Bet you can’t guess mine.

*And BTW I recently discovered Apollo Nove (see “Inexplicata” in Sultry) and dammit if that doesn’t sound like love what does? Makes me want to attempt a slow samba, though I’d be so black with it. The layers of the harp, organ and background vocals are orgasmic. I can visualize myself on a cloud with a lover. I’m such a hippie.
