(San Francisco, CA) — On Saturday, April 14, 2012, San Jose film maker, John Reps, released a 45-minute documentary in respect to the longest running Hip Hop radio show in the world. With guest appearances from DJ Premier, RZA (Wu-Tang Clan), Mobb Deep, Camp Lo, and more, Cool Breeze: A Documentary on Kevvy Kev delves into the story of the host behind “The Drum” on 90.1 KZSU and how the show helped landscape Bay Area Hip Hop radio for 26 years.

About Kevvy Kev & The Drum

Kevvy Kev grew up in Queens and went to the Bronx High School of Science alongside Christopher Reid of Kid N’ Play and Crash Crew’s Barry B. As Hip Hop was exploding at the time of the 70’s and 80’s, Kev moved to California in 1982 to attend Stanford University. He noticed the party scene was not the same as Queens, so to help bring the exploding Hip Hop flavor that was going on in the East Coast, Kevvy Kev started his now infamous radio show. “The Drum” catered towards East Coast music which led to a wildfire of support, both promotionally and through artists on tour. Of those artists who stopped by the show included The Fugees, Boot Camp Click, Kool G, Jay-Z when he was in a group called Original Flavor, and Wu-Tang, whom together performed an historical 40-minute freestyle on air.

Eventually, Kevvy Kev began “The Drum” Hip Hop festival which hosted names like Special Ed, Camp Lo, Hieroglyphics, Living Legends, Peanut Butter Wold, Saafir, CL Smooth, Planet Asia, Smif & Wessun, and Das EFX.

About John Reps

John Reps (born in 1976) is a Music Video Director, born in Gaines Ville, Florida. In his early years, he moved to San Jose, California and went on to attend Piedmont Hills High School, De Anza College, and eventually California State University in Los Angeles   to major in Media Studies in Film and TV. John Reps has performed underwork as a production assistant for producer Michael Abbott and Director Estevan Oriol of Soul Assasins Studios and has worked on music videos with artists such as Megabusive, Sunspot Jonz of The Living Legends, Camp Lo, Phesto D (Souls of Mischief Crew), Prince Po (Organized Konfusion), Mellow Man Ace, Medusa, Sen Dog (Cypress Hill), Matt Gamin (Lurk Music), and Kevvy Kev.

I once told Sulaiman that I wanted to find the art that was on the walls in that scene of Belly (by Thierry le Goues) and suggested he use it for (RDV7). I’m big on art and the walls of my apartment have always been lined with it. He delivered immaculately. The talent on the Blind I staff never ceases to amaze me. Our imaginations are all over the place.  For this volume, Noah asked me the usual, “What do you want the cover to look like?” I responded with my usual abstract (albeit unhelpful) explanation of what I had in mind.  It went something like this.

Me: Ummm this is what I’m thinking (Shows a classic photo of Kate Moss smoking a cigarette). I like the idea of a beautiful woman smoking a cigarette. Probably because I want someone to take an edgy picture of me with a cigarette. Even though I don’t smoke.  (Shows photo of Naomi Campbell naked pointing a gun at the camera). Like a good girl gone bad vibe.
No: I feel you. Let me look at all of these pics. I’m in full agreement with having titties on the covers of RDV now. I’m glad Pam Grier was the first.
Me: Well… it’s not about the titties, Noah. More like raw sexuality and strength, you know?
No: Yeah…All that. And titites!

The one we ended up with was the first image I sent to Noah. And I love the way he flipped it! If you’ve noticed, we’ve posted less and less of these compilations. It’s not because we don’t love them or don’t care. We just want to adhere to our mantra of quality over quantity and allow you to really spend time with each one.  It’s always a joy for me to highlight artists that are friends of mine on here and this month there are several.  Hopefully you enjoy this one!
