BLIND I/PST EVENT: SUMMER SOUL SERIES W/ SONNYMOON

As a part of our Blind I Summer Soul Series, we’ve teamed up with Pacific Standard Time, DJ Sake One, Fran Boogie and  DJ Sloepoke to not only welcome Sonnymoon to the Bay Area for an incredible show, but to also  celebrate our very own Noahdeeakili’s birthday! We will be hosting more events as the year progresses, so peep our monthly calendar for details. In the words of Sake:

“Expect dynamite soul, Frisco disco, Caribbean killers, soulful house, classic hip-hop, and anything that moves feet and minds. Maybe you know Noah Deeakili? Maybe No knows you. He definitely knows dope! And as part of the Blind I For the Kids blog collective he’s recognized coast to coast as a tastemaker, supporter of the real, and an artist in his own right. And he’s celebrating his birthday this Thursday night at PST so our mission as a community is a no-brainer: COME THRU AND LET’S GET NOAH DRUNK.”

Well said. Come out and  celebrate with us. We love you Noah. Happy Birthday in Advance!

THANK HIM LATER, ANSWER ME NOW

What’s with this Drake guy? Seriously? Or, rather, what’s all the fuss about him? What is it about a marginal rapper/terrible singer that has so many folks losing their minds? And why am I so obsessed with figuring that out?

There doesn’t seem to be much in-between with this kid. Folks either think he’s the wackest thing ever ( “Hip-Hop’s version of a  boy band”=LMFAO) or he’s a breath of fresh air. I suppose it shouldn’t come as a surprise that an artist who reflects the majority of Hip-Hop’s listening audience would one day have a day in the sun. Street credibility is quickly becoming a thing of the past; listeners have finally accepted that most of their favorite gangsters are flat-out lying anyway (shout out to Officer Ricky) and aren’t as pressed to vicariously live out their hood fantasies through rappers who are essentially doing the same thing. Enter Wheelchair Jimmy.

Last week, Talib Kweli tweeted Drake is a mainstream rapper who aint scared to rhyme about feelings & aint frontin’ like a goon. Aint that what they want?” That gave me some pause. I mean, as far as rappers who are gonna have the ears of a nation of impressionable kids go, I’d far rather have them listening to Drizzy than Jeezy. On the flip, his work is still wrought with ‘bitches’, ‘hoes’ and consummate materialism. Two points for having the courage to be emo, but the sisters are still getting the second class treatment and we’re still obsessing over buying shit. And he still has that fascination with death that his “gangster” contemporaries have. What’s up with that?

OH HAPPY DAY!

Yesterday, Lil’ Wayne started his 1 year sentence on Rikers Island (NEW YORK STAND UP….wait, bad time?) after being convicted on gun charges stemming from an arrest here on July 22, 2007. That’s my birthday! It was like a gift from the NYPD, whodathunkit?

Wayne has had one of the more interesting careers in Hip-Hop, as far as the genre’s megastars go. Two years older than myself, he’s arguably the most significant rapper of our generation (before you choke on the letters ‘J’ and ‘Z’, please be reminded that being born in 1969 qualifies one for a different generation), a fact I personally find depressing. Wayne’s been on Hip-Hop’s radar since 1997 when he was a marginal member of the marginal Hot Boyz. Somehow, to the complete shock of many (well, me at least), Wayne released some mixtapes that forced people to view him as a credible rapper. In the past five years, we’ve watched dude take a drug addled ride to the top of the charts, bringing along motley crew of scallywags and awkwardly cast clique members (Wheelchair Jimmy, stand the fuck up). He’s done more guest appearances in the past two years than some rappers will in an entire career. He’s been both a hipster darling and a hood staple. He had enough sons in one year to start an R&B group.

And now he’s going to jail. And I can’t help but to be a little glad.

DJ EKOGIRL – SOULIFE

artworks-000000843295-6cfx7g-originalMy homie DJ EkoGirl made a nice mix of soulful goodness that y’all need to DL. In her own words…

Soulife is the nuSoul sound i’m most well-known for at a residency called Kiss.
?some well-known heavy hitters in there with new tracks: alicia, sade
?some really fly remixes: stardust, erykah+bisope, bugz
?some super amazing new music from: electric wire hustle, fat freddy’s drop
?and then a lot of unfamiliar staples that have been in my soul crates for a few years to round it out.
it definitely could use some woofer-love for the low end on the dubstep at the front.
I hope you like it too.. but really.. i do. and that’s why i do it. it’s SUCH a pleasure to share it with you.
love,
erica

VIDEO: COOL KIDS / CURREN$Y / JAY ELECTRONICA LIVE AT UNDER100

I love a good cypher ! I’m really feeling Curren$y right now.. Jet over everything. The slow flow is ill. They caught Jay off guard .. but he’s off the hook.  Definitely Fresh! Peep

DD172 and Under100 put together another crazy night. I ran through with Dan on Tuesday to check out a special performance from the Cool Kids who had friends Stalley, Mikey Factz, Jay Electonica, Amanda Diva, Curren$y and more in the building with many jumping on the mic for an extended cypher. Word was that the Black Keys and Mos Def would be making a late night performance, but around 12:30 the show ended, supposedly due to cops and a noise complaint, and the show turned into a mini party upstairs in the gallery space. – Keap Hope

ARTIST SPOTLIGHT:BRITTANY BOSCO

Ready For The World: Brittany Bosco

Brittany Bosco is a dynamic artist. Musically, she’s a chameleon that radiates colors, moods and energy with every note. Her vocal range is as tremendous as her production. She’s a grounded, southern belle, cultivating a sound that’s two steps ahead of other singers. Her EPs, City of Nowhere and Spectrum, reached thousands of ears and cooked up an appetite for her official debut, Black.

This winter, Bosco will deliver a gem for audiophiles, full of live instrumentation, invigorating vocals and unique overtures.  The Savannah native recently did a series of shows in New York City that roused the underground scene and got people talking. We have been waiting for Brittany’s defining moment, which is undoubtedly approaching.

Interview after the jump.
