HIP-HOP GETS POLITICAL: POWELL FOR CONGRESS

Most of us are old enough to recall Kevin Powell as a cast member of the first season of MTV’s The Real World (back when it was provocative, ground breaking documentary television and before it descended into “OMG! Everyone is, like, drunk and hot and totally gonna make out!”). What some of you may not know is that Powell has a 25 year career as an activist and writer based in Brooklyn. He is the author of some 11 books and was an integral part of Vibe’s original editorial line-up.

Powell is currently making his second run for Congress in Brooklyn’s 10th Congressional District, which includes the iconic Bed Stuy, Fort Greene and East New York neighborhoods (home to a lot of Hip-Hop history and some of your favorite artists, indluding Jay, B.I.G., Jeru, the GZA, ODB,  etc). My interest in Powell’s campaign is twofold: I’m not only a huge fan of his writing and activist work, but I’m also a resident of the central Brooklyn area he wants to represent. And I definitely think the brother represents a change we need around these parts.

On November 5^th, the world awoke to a new image of hope, progress, and valor. Ignited by the passionate voter turnout leading up to Election day, Barack Obama had officially become the 44th President-elect of the United States of America. The campaign leading up to this moment was an arduous one, full of twists and turns that formed the road to change. In efforts to commemorate that spirit and make sure that it lives on forever in our hearts and minds, we have created a memento to “Remember, Remember, The 5th Of November” – the day we woke up to a symbol of clear change and progress in American history.

Join us this Sunday as we officially commemorate the election of the 44th President of the United States, Barack Obama, and the first official day of CHANGE in America and the world. On the 4th the votes were at hand, on the 5th the CHANGE began!!!

ONE WORD…AMAZING.

Photographer Callie Shell was given the opportunity to photograph Barack Obama through his campaign for President. Her pictures are by far the best that I’ve seen of Obama and also give much more life to his campaign and the movement than what you may see in video. It’s amazing that photographs have so much power. The picture above is of Obama in a stairway listening to his introduction at the third rally/speech of that day. GEARING UP FOR A CIVIL WAR?

Thanks to my friend Lauren for sending me this. Supposedly these have been coming into the city of Chicago in the past week or so with some sort of unknown purpose. On assumption could lead you to believe that this is something to be used for the huge Obama rally taking place in Grant Park on November 4th to monitor the crowds, but that doesn’t explain why it’s completely in army camoflauge, not to mention BIG AS HELL. Which leads ME to believe that it’s really just in case
A.) Obama wins, McCain voters start wilin out, and need to be put down, or
B.) McCain wins, I get a few TVs from Best Buy without having to wait for the day after Thanksgiving, and they wanna catch me before I even hit the parking lot.

Either way, the shit is scary and also a clear sign of how real it could REALLY be 8 days from now. That is all.
