I couldn’t really figure out the tone I wanted this volume of Rendezvous to have. So it was fitting when Noah sent me the cover artwork and it looked like braille or an encryption you have to decode.  However, after playing the songs in this one, I have to say it’s one of my favorites I’ve done in a while. Songs like “Manifestations” aren’t conventionally “sexy” but to me there’s something sultry about them. These mixes in general are like a trip inside our minds and what moves us each. Not sure why exactly, but somehow this fits nicely. Tracks/links after the jump. Enjoy.

Well the good folks over @ Bonafide Magazine have been putting out a series entitled Bonafied Beats, and for Vol.6 they called on the talents of Luke Vibert. The schitt is like hoppin in a DeLorean of 1.21 gigawatts to late 98/early 99. In Bonafide’s words…

Fresh from carbonite, the next mix in the Bonafide Beats series is certified vintage, having been in storage since Prince was partying in 1999. Washing up on the silicon shores of Luke Vibert’s hard drive some ten or more years since it was made, this mix captures the vibrancy of underground hip-hop on the cusp of the new millennium. With the ‘golden-era’ fast disappearing in the rear-view mirror, here we see one-time independent outfits such as Company Flow and Slum Village take a breath and prepare to dive deeper, making way for Fiddy and co. to lurch in and plunder all that glamour and gold offered up to the new millennium ‘gangster’ rappers.

Can you believe the seasons have changed already? This year is moving at the speed of light. I’m particularly proud of the Blind I team for the way we continue to progress as a unit and a movement. I decided to do a RDV this month because as summer unwinds and the temperature starts to drop, people gravitate toward their special someone. Okay so, thus far we have had NKD’s on some str8 up heat to kick start it all, then Dilla, then Beats, then Love , then Stereolab, then Portishead, then we had last months double NKD for Stevie & for this month I had to go with my man Busa Busss!! So many people sleep on Busta Rhymes! I never see him any ANNNNNNNNNNNYBODYS top 10 or top 20 for that matter. I had to dead that by doing a No Knows Busta. 60 pinche tracks! & even THAT was narrowed down. These are just my all time favorite Busta songs of all time. The others will be saved for a sequel somewhere down the road, but for now I think these will suffice. If you’ve always thought like me… then this is FOR YOU! Back when I was a young padawan trying to learn the ways of the force I would get frustrated with my progress & you can say I was “stressin’”. Prince Poetry & Pharoahe Monch better known as Organized Konfusion  dropped the single and title track off their sophomore release “STRESS (THE EXTINCTION AGENDA)” . It was a time when MC’s were stepping into realms unseen, experimenting with various styles and cadences, pushing the lyrical envelope while ominous grooves and tones of dissonance over break beats took prominence. An album you MUST have if you are an MC or just a fan of resickulous freshness when it comes to music. Stress no longer… it’s a new month & there’s only 5 months left till 20XI… let’s push the gas on this biotch shall we?

BLAKROC & DD172….

As the recent publicity surrounding Mos Def, Jay Electronica and Curren$y‘s collaborative-side-group Center Edge Territory reached a feverish pitch in the viral music world, questions arose around the studio where said collaboration and countless other secret musical rendezvous are rumored to have occurred. Alas, Mr. Damon Dash, a very familiar face in the trend-setting music mogul world has been behind it all, providing artists with the DD172 space in Tribeca. DD172 seems to be a new hot-spot for brainstorming sessions, musical vanguard, and almost certainly a long, raucous line of eager artists wanting in to create their own masterpieces. For this is how musicians work. We are historians at heart, purists of our art form, and suckers for atmospheres where our creativity can flow at ease. Dash and DD172 have recently partnered up with rock group The Black Keys and artists like Mos Def, Zoe Kravitz, Raekwon, ODB, RZA, Ludacris, Pharoahe Monch, Billy Danze of M.O.P., Om’Mas Keith of Sa-Ra, Tash and more, to create the BlakRoc project, of which we recently posted a video clip on the site. Chicago-bred video mavens Coodie & Chike have spearheaded the coverage of the project as well as Creative Control. Pretty much a creative mash of great proportions! We’ll see what fruitful creations come from this space in the future, but one thing is presently sure: the future is bright for ideas of this magnitude, and I hope it spurs more individuals to create workspaces and projects similar to this one. I had the pleasure of catching this performance during CMJ week in NYC. Bilal was one of the most anticipated artists to hit the stage that night and as usual he tore it down. “Levels” is from his forthcoming album via Plug Research. I love the way it begins.
