ANOTHER PART OF MJ: MICHAEL JACKSON REMAKES, REMIXES & RE-EDITS VOL 1 & 2 [REPOST]

In celebration of the birthday of Michael Jackson , I decided to repost this .. don’t sleep!!
Our Peoples over at illvibe are always keeping it fresh. Dj lil’ Dave is really putting it down with the BEST MICHAEL JACKSON TRIBUTE MIX HANDS DOWN…Yeah i said it! I’ve heard a lot of MJ mixes and i like “Another part of MJ: Michael Jackson Remakes, Remixes & Re-Edits ” the most. What’s fresh about it is that instead of playing all the obvious classics we all know and love, he pulled together all the remixes, remakes, re-redits, b-sides, and demos he could find. The result is a mix of hiphop, reggae, house, samba, boogie, and of course some soul.

I was juiced in search of the track listing to find out there was another mix he put out in the anniversary of the Late Great King!

FAT BEATS TO CLOSE NYC & L.A. STORES

To some of you this aint news. To me & the rest of the faithfuls, it is huge! Fat Beats is one of the only few record stores around where you can find your hip hop & other musical needs. Homies from J.Rocc to Shames Worthy to House Shoes have held jobs there. It has been a haven for all things hip hop & surrounding itself with the illest of the ills! Let’s face it… record stores have become obsolete due to them becoming desolate. FACT - No one buys schitt no more. FACT - Everyone downloads. FACT - & this is why there are no more record stores. I remember talking to the homies Tanya Morgan off the record about this very same issue. They wrote a song about it too… like to hear it? Here it goes…

HIP-HOP GETS POLITICAL: POWELL FOR CONGRESS

Most of us are old enough to recall Kevin Powell as a cast member of the first season of MTV’s The Real World (back when it was provocative, ground breaking documentary television and before it descended into “OMG! Everyone is, like, drunk and hot and totally gonna make out!”). What some of you may not know is that Powell has a 25 year career as an activist and writer based in Brooklyn. He is the author of some 11 books and was an integral part of Vibe’s original editorial line-up.

Powell is currently making his second run for Congress in Brooklyn’s 10th Congressional District, which includes the iconic Bed Stuy, Fort Greene and East New York neighborhoods (home to a lot of Hip-Hop history and some of your favorite artists, indluding Jay, B.I.G., Jeru, the GZA, ODB,  etc). My interest in Powell’s campaign is twofold: I’m not only a huge fan of his writing and activist work, but I’m also a resident of the central Brooklyn area he wants to represent. And I definitely think the brother represents a change we need around these parts.

On November 28th, BBC Radio 1 opened the decks for one of Blind I’s favorite producers – Mr. Hudson Mohawke – to do his thing and put together a superb, stellar, fantastic Essential Mix. As the recent publicity surrounding Mos Def, Jay Electronica and Curren$y‘s collaborative-side-group Center Edge Territory reached a feverish pitch in the viral music world, questions arose around the studio where said collaboration and countless other secret musical rendezvous are rumored to have occurred. Alas, Mr. Damon Dash, a very familiar face in the trend-setting music mogul world has been behind it all, providing artists with the DD172 space in Tribeca. DD172 seems to be a new hot-spot for brainstorming sessions, musical vanguard, and almost certainly a long, raucous line of eager artists wanting in to create their own masterpieces. For this is how musicians work. We are historians at heart, purists of our art form, and suckers for atmospheres where our creativity can flow at ease. Dash and DD172 have recently partnered up with rock group The Black Keys and artists like Mos Def, Zoe Kravitz, Raekwon, ODB, RZA, Ludacris, Pharoahe Monch, Billy Danze of M.O.P., Om’Mas Keith of Sa-Ra, Tash and more, to create the BlakRoc project, of which we recently posted a video clip on the site. Chicago-bred video mavens Coodie & Chike have spearheaded the coverage of the project as well as Creative Control. Pretty much a creative mash of great proportions! We’ll see what fruitful creations come from this space in the future, but one thing is presently sure: the future is bright for ideas of this magnitude, and I hope it spurs more individuals to create workspaces and projects similar to this one. Great music!
