Today we celebrate the birth and amazing career of the G.O.A.T. Jay Dee (J Dilla) born James Dewitt Yancey. Every year I have been making these posts & it still is crazy to me, but let’s not even go there… instead let’s all celebrate the life & musical career of a musical legend that many of were blessed to watch & listen to his growth. He changed the game with his many styles & approach. He made everyone around him work much harder because of his dedication to the basement. He will forever hold a special place in all our hearts & ears as well as history. WHAT IF THERE WERE NO MORE DVD’S?

When I say Technicolor what comes to your mind? Perhaps the logo at the end of the movies we watch, or the last line of the credits. How about the process that has been putting color in films since 1922. Well now they also are the company that produce the majority of those nice shiny DVD discs that Hollywood burns its films on, which we later rent at our Blockbusters/Netflix, etc. and buy and put in our movie library. What if on a massive scale they just stopped?  Think about it, if all those millions of discs don’t get made.

Nothing quite prepares you for the culture shock of Jay Walker’s library. You exit the austere parlor of his New England home and pass through a hallway into the bibliographic equivalent of a Disney ride. Stuffed with landmark tomes and eye-grabbing historical objects—on the walls, on tables, standing on the floor—the room occupies about 3,600 square feet on three mazelike levels. Is that a Sputnik? (Yes.) Hey, those books appear to be bound in rubies. (They are.) That edition of Chaucer … is it a Kelmscott? (Natch.) Gee, that chandelier looks like the one in the James Bond flick Die Another Day. (Because it is.) No matter where you turn in this ziggurat, another treasure beckons you—a 1665 Bills of Mortality chronicle of London (you can track plague fatalities by week), the instruction manual for the Saturn V rocket (which launched the Apollo 11 capsule to the moon), a framed napkin from 1943 on which Franklin D. Roosevelt outlined his plan to win World War II. In no time, your mind is stretched like hot taffy.
