MIXTAPE: SMKA PRESENTS THE 808 EXPERIMENT VOL. 3

The good folks at SMKA release the third installment to their 808 Experiment series, featuring a cache of fucking awesome artist like, but not limited to branDun DeShay, Mikkey Halsted, Freddie Gibbs, and Sam Dew of Cloudeater (see what I did there?) . Trust me, these mogs went hard on this one. Lend and ear to Sam Dew’s track District In The Dark and sniff the bag before you cop the zip (see what I did there?). Oh, and for those who reside in Atlanta there are two release parties happening this weekend in honor of this glorious occasion. Pluggers after that thang.

BLIND I SAYS GO! FEBRUARY 2011

I turn 25 on Saturday, and to echo my current musical mood I decided to make this month’s Blind I Says GO! all about the raps! Well, mostly about the raps. Amidst songs featuring Lupe Fiasco, Madlib, Kidz In The Hall, Curren$y, Mikkey Halsted, Co$$, Blu, Styles P, Freddie Gibbs, Kendrick Lamar, Gucci Mane, Tabi Bonney, Dom Kennedy, Gilbere Forté, Pac Div, Stalley, and Martin & Malcolm, there’s a bit of soul in this mix compliments of Spree Wilson, Esthero, and some unreleased EARLY production from Chad Hugo and Pharrell Williams of The Neptunes for a R&B singer named Mike E. who was produced by Teddy Riley back when the Neptunes duo was ghost-producing for the legend. If that ain’t enough to get you excited to download this I don’t know what is. So without further ado, partake! Track listing after the jump.

SCHEME – LOSE YOUR SOUL (FEAT. MIKKEY HALSTED)

Scheme – Lose Your Soul (feat. Mikkey Halsted) (DL Usershare)

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

Alex from Ruby Hornet sent this my way, and they’ve been talking to me about Scheme for a good minute, putting a good push behind him and rightfully so. “Lose Your Soul“, produced by Panik of The Molemen and featuring Mikkey Halsted, is a very dope track with hard-hitting bars and a dope blaxploitation-esque beat to provide the background. I’ll let them tell it:

“Greed gets you,” says Mikkey Halsted.  “You might start out from a real place of real hunger, or real starvation or real poverty.  You’re really just trying to feed yourself.  But then feeding yourself and getting a roof over your head is not enough.”

We all know the story of once heralded sports stars banished for cheating.  Successful businessmen caught with hands in the cookie jar who go from rich to poor to behind bars in the blink of an eye.  Countless times we are introduced to characters such as Scarface that just don’t know when to quit and consequently become victims of their own greed. Such is the tale on “Lose Your Soul”, a song created by Scheme, an emerging emcee out of The Molemen camp, one of Chicago’s most respected crews.

“Lose Your Soul” was produced by Panik of the Molemen, and Scheme enlisted the services of Mikkey Halsted as well as Indianapolis based DJ Metrognome to complete the song.  Mikkey and Scheme came together at SoundScape Studios with RubyHornet to record the track, which will be featured on Scheme’s upcoming mixtape, Same Rebel New Cause.
