Blind I faithful, it’s been a minute since we’ve had the chance to consistently hit you with one of the major pillars in which Blind I was built upon – the cold ass compilation. Guess what though? We’re back in there like swim wear. I present to you my new compilation series, TESL.A., an ode to not only my recent departure from my birthplace of Chicago to Los Angeles, but also to honor the greatest inventor not named Leonardo DaVinci, Mr. Nikola Tesla. Now I know people are thinking, what the hell does Tesla have to do with cold ass music? Imagine a maddening scientist’s moves around a recording studio, and you’ll begin to understand the connection as you rock with the songs I’ve picked for your listening pleasure. All genres, no boundaries. Hit the jump for the track listing/download link and partake!

The good folks at SMKA release the third installment to their 808 Experiment series, featuring a cache of fucking awesome artist like, but not limited to branDun DeShay, Mikkey Halsted, Freddie Gibbs, and Sam Dew of Cloudeater (see what I did there?) . Trust me, these mogs went hard on this one. Lend and ear to Sam Dew’s track District In The Dark and sniff the bag before you cop the zip (see what I did there?). Oh, and for those who reside in Atlanta there are two release parties happening this weekend in honor of this glorious occasion. Pluggers after that thang.

I turn 25 on Saturday, and to echo my current musical mood I decided to make this month’s Blind I Says GO! all about the raps! Well, mostly about the raps. Amidst songs featuring Lupe Fiasco, Madlib, Kidz In The Hall, Curren$y, Mikkey Halsted, Co$$, Blu, Styles P, Freddie Gibbs, Kendrick Lamar, Gucci Mane, Tabi Bonney, Dom Kennedy, Gilbere Forté, Pac Div, Stalley, and Martin & Malcolm, there’s a bit of soul in this mix compliments of Spree Wilson, Esthero, and some unreleased EARLY production from Chad Hugo and Pharrell Williams of The Neptunes for a R&B singer named Mike E. who was produced by Teddy Riley back when the Neptunes duo was ghost-producing for the legend. If that ain’t enough to get you excited to download this I don’t know what is. So without further ado, partake! Track listing after the jump.
Davy Greenberg comes through and smashes the game yet again with another directorial gem of a video for Mikkey Halsted & Paypa of Project Mayhem‘s collaborative track “So Mean“. Partake!
*DeVonte voice* Awwwww yeah…I’ve been waiting for this ever since last year. Maja 7th and Andrew from Fake Shore Drive came together like Voltron with the help of Ill Brown on the mix , DJ Castle on the scratch, and some of the Midwest’s finest MC’s to create “The Breakout“, a splendid look into the talent that’s on the rise out here! By now you’re already fully aware of the tragedy that took place in Haiti this month and the devastation it has caused its people. Despite the decrease in coverage by major media outlets we must ensure that this event does not decrease in relevance in our own lives and we continue to do everything we can to aid and assist those in need. If you’re in or around Chicago on January 31st support the The Every Drop Counts Chicago Benefit Concert and its cause.
Here’s a excerpt of Every Drop Counts’ mission statement taken off of their website:
“We began by establishing a Hip-Hop and soul benefit concert—scheduled to take place in Chicago on Sunday, January 31, 2010. The benefit is meant to create awareness of the fundamental need and human right to access clean water. Water is an essential resource to the vitality of human life, it engenders prolonged community building and development.”
All proceeds from ticket and merchandise sales will go directly to World Water Relief
Shapow! 1st video release from Maja 7th & FSD’s The Breakout mixtape, which is dropping any day now. This shit is about to be an absolute PROBLEM. Freddie & Mikkey kill it. Shot and directed by Brandon “N2Ition” Riley
First time online today! So I’ve gotta lace you guys. Jay Illa sent over a preview of the “4,3,2,1” flip he commissioned from Rhymefest, Juice, Mikkey Halsted, and Twone Gabs for his upcoming release, “Revenge Of The Backpacks 2: Welcome To Chicago“. Shot & recorded at Soundscape Studios, it’s sure to give you that real authentic hip-hop feel. The rest of the Backpacks 2 project features slated tracks from Rhymefest, Juice, Mikkey Halsted, Twone Gabz, Marvo, Que Billah, the League, Project Mayhem, Naledge, Mic Terror, Erika Shevon, Add 2, Phil G, Pugs Atomz, Rashid Hadee, Prime Meridian, and even yours truly. It should be dope when it drops!
Alex from Ruby Hornet sent this my way, and they’ve been talking to me about Scheme for a good minute, putting a good push behind him and rightfully so. “Lose Your Soul“, produced by Panik of The Molemen and featuring Mikkey Halsted, is a very dope track with hard-hitting bars and a dope blaxploitation-esque beat to provide the background. I’ll let them tell it:
“Greed gets you,” says Mikkey Halsted. “You might start out from a real place of real hunger, or real starvation or real poverty. You’re really just trying to feed yourself. But then feeding yourself and getting a roof over your head is not enough.”
We all know the story of once heralded sports stars banished for cheating. Successful businessmen caught with hands in the cookie jar who go from rich to poor to behind bars in the blink of an eye. Countless times we are introduced to characters such as Scarface that just don’t know when to quit and consequently become victims of their own greed. Such is the tale on “Lose Your Soul”, a song created by Scheme, an emerging emcee out of The Molemen camp, one of Chicago’s most respected crews.
“Lose Your Soul” was produced by Panik of the Molemen, and Scheme enlisted the services of Mikkey Halsted as well as Indianapolis based DJ Metrognome to complete the song. Mikkey and Scheme came together at SoundScape Studios with RubyHornet to record the track, which will be featured on Scheme’s upcoming mixtape, Same Rebel New Cause.
