ARTHUR VEROCAI – FLYING TO L.A. [VIDEO+MP3]

“I could listen to the (Arthur Verocai) album everyday for the rest of my life” – Madlib

Arthur Verocai is a mysterious figure even in his native Brasil.  He has composed and arranged for such giants as Jorge Ben, Gal Costa and Leny Andrade.  But hip hop heads know him for his often sampled (see Ludacris, MF Doom and Little Brother) self-titled solo album.  The album came out at the height of the Brasilian dictatorship and was a commercial failure.  His performance of this seminal 1972 record complete brought the sold out crowd at the Luckman Theater to a stand still.  According to Verocai, he had never played the record “alive or dead!”  His delight at the opportunity to play this music in it’s complete form can be seen on the Timeless DVD box set.

This song, “Flying to LA” was written specifically for the concert at the Luckman.  It starts with open drums by Mamao from the famed Brasilian trio Azymuth, and then goes on a beautiful harmonic journey.  Enjoy, share and turn it up.

They go in on Take Notice off of Dilla’s Rough Draft & super hip hop engineer Bob Power mixed down the audio version. After seeing this, you will circle March 30th 20X as a day you too will be awaiting.

A MAGICAL MUSICAL NIGHT [A SUITE FOR MA DUKES]

Hours ago an audience was fortunate to hear the sounds of the man we all know and love, J Dilla through an orchestra composed under the direction of Miguel Atwood Ferguson.As much as I wanted to,  I wasn’t able to fly down to L.A. for this one. However Our good friend Dert was not only in attendance, but sitting front row to witness what I knew would be a night to talk about for years to come. Lucky for us, He was able to record the last memorable moments of the performance. The rest is through his eyes & words.

This is video I took at the Timeless: Suite For Ma Dukes concert. A 40-piece orchestra interpreting Jay-Dee’s wonderful work from the hits to the obscure. Arrangements by Miguel Atwood Ferguson. There were numerous cameos throughout the night but this video features Posdnous of the great De La Soul and Talib Kweli performing Stakes Is High and Illa J doing adlibs over Fall in Love. Karriem Riggins was on the drums for the 2nd half of the show. I was trying to be respectful by not taking video but at this point everyone in the place took out cameras and flashes were going off. Since I was in the front row, I might as well share a little bit with y’all. When the full concert comes out on DVD (since there was a film crew) it’s definitely a must-have for Dilla fans and music lovers alike.-Dert

DOING IT FOR DILLA + L.A. SUITE FOR MA DUKES

I was running around and forgot to put this up yesterday. Shepard Fairey of Obey/Obama Poster fame and artist B+ collaborated to create this special print of Dilla Dog in efforts to raise money for Ma Dukes. The print, of which only 400 were made, releases today and is going for $55. It’s 18 in x 24 in and can be picked up at Obey’s site. In conjunction with the poster, Miguel Atwood-Ferguson and Carlos Nino are hosting  “A Suite For Ma Dukes” with special guests House Shoes & J Rocc in L.A. on Sunday. Details for that event are also on the Obey site. As a preview they released footage of a jam session in preparation:
