MAIYA PRESENTS…RENDEZVOUS-THE SOUL EDITION

The new year always brings massive periods of reflection for me. Not only do we all start a new chapter, but I have a January birthday, so I’m looking ahead and acknowledging my past simultaneously. I assess where I want to be,  areas of life to improve and lessons to keep in my back pocket.  I’ve always been an extremely deep thinker, and music significantly marks and highlights different seasons on my life.

There are a few reasons I decided to do this compilation. First, I lived in the 757 Virginia Beach area for half of my high school experience and I must say that the radio down there is consistently two steps ahead. Through The Neptunes, Timbaland, Missy Elliott all the way back to vets like Teddy Riley, the 757 has clearly proven to be a hotbed for musical creativity. Aside from that, during this era every artist you see in the cover artwork from our wonderful NO had a collective synergy and a distinct sound that was simply indelible.  The samples used, the drum machine skills, the sound effects and the overall style has never been fully duplicated. And none of them rapped that great but somehow every song was bounce-worthy enough to overcompensate. I culled some of my favorite Tim, Missy, Ginuwine, Playa and Aaliyah joints that embodied their movement to pay homage.  I had to fish some of the CDs out of my collection and convert them to MP3s (see: time consuming) so you better enjoy.

It’s Valentine’s Day Blind I faithful! And whether you’re filled with love or steeped in heartache, chances are you will be listening to whatever suits your mood today. Allow us to make it easier. I thought about making a new compilation for the day and then I remembered all of the amazing compilations we’ve created individually and as a staff. Through these, we touch on every topic from sex to breakups to makeups. We’ve gained a lot of new fans since some of these were posted years ago, so now with love, we present The Love Re-UP (11 compilations). Hit the skip for the the mixtapes. The first time we decided to collaborate on a compilation it was for Grimey, which was three volumes of hardcore hip hop. And  during the process of selecting songs, we discovered that our individual musical tastes were very similar and complemented each other well. We have some dope compilation ideas for the future but for now we proudly present… All That Jazz Vol. 1. Some of the songs are strictly jazz, while others just have the smooth vibe like “Autumn’s Evening Breeze.” In the tracklist, the songs in blue were picked by Maiya and teal by NO and we alternated taking turns. It’s cold outside and the perfect time to throw this compilation on and let it ride.

Being the huge Wu fan that I am, I thought it was a dope idea and I was excited to get started. We’ve been tag teaming the best of the talented emcees and with 20 tracks each, I must admit we’ve outdone ourselves here.
