ARTHUR VEROCAI – FLYING TO L.A. [VIDEO+MP3]

“I could listen to the (Arthur Verocai) album everyday for the rest of my life” – Madlib

Arthur Verocai is a mysterious figure even in his native Brasil.  He has composed and arranged for such giants as Jorge Ben, Gal Costa and Leny Andrade.  But hip hop heads know him for his often sampled (see Ludacris, MF Doom and Little Brother) self-titled solo album.  The album came out at the height of the Brasilian dictatorship and was a commercial failure.  His performance of this seminal 1972 record complete brought the sold out crowd at the Luckman Theater to a stand still.  According to Verocai, he had never played the record “alive or dead!”  His delight at the opportunity to play this music in it’s complete form can be seen on the Timeless DVD box set.

This song, “Flying to LA” was written specifically for the concert at the Luckman.  It starts with open drums by Mamao from the famed Brasilian trio Azymuth, and then goes on a beautiful harmonic journey.  Enjoy, share and turn it up.

On November 28th, BBC Radio 1 opened the decks for one of Blind I’s favorite producers – Mr. Hudson Mohawke – to do his thing and put together a superb, stellar, fantastic Essential Mix. This thing is CRAZY man, I’m talking 57 tracks of complete BANGERS! I’ve included a MP3 download along with the stream so you can check it out however you please, but whatever you do, indulge!

BLAKROC & DD172….

As the recent publicity surrounding Mos Def, Jay Electronica and Curren$y‘s collaborative-side-group Center Edge Territory reached a feverish pitch in the viral music world, questions arose around the studio where said collaboration and countless other secret musical rendezvous are rumored to have occurred. Alas, Mr. Damon Dash, a very familiar face in the trend-setting music mogul world has been behind it all, providing artists with the DD172 space in Tribeca. DD172 seems to be a new hot-spot for brainstorming sessions, musical vanguard, and almost certainly a long, raucous line of eager artists wanting in to create their own masterpieces. For this is how musicians work. We are historians at heart, purists of our art form, and suckers for atmospheres where our creativity can flow at ease. Dash and DD172 have recently partnered up with rock group The Black Keys and artists like Mos Def, Zoe Kravitz, Raekwon, ODB, RZA, Ludacris, Pharoahe Monch, Billy Danze of M.O.P., Om’Mas Keith of Sa-Ra, Tash and more, to create the BlakRoc project, of which we recently posted a video clip on the site. Chicago-bred video mavens Coodie & Chike have spearheaded the coverage of the project as well as Creative Control. Pretty much a creative mash of great proportions! We’ll see what fruitful creations come from this space in the future, but one thing is presently sure: the future is bright for ideas of this magnitude, and I hope it spurs more individuals to create workspaces and projects similar to this one. Great music!

Yeah, it’s that serious. A few days ago, I took my quest to find the elusive All About The Bad Boys track to Twitter in efforts to try and find it for my catalogue and the world’s pleasure. I was directed to Mr. Mike Love, who was one-half of the Bad Boys on WGCI during their heyday,and he threw me the oop of all oops with the record. I, being the gentleman that I am, threw it to my homie Andrew over at FSD and let him run wild with it. A few days later, Mike hits me with THIS gem. Ridiculous collection of freestyles recorded on the radio show from artists like Common, Crucial Conflict, Lord Tariq & Peter Gunz, Fat Joe & Big Pun, Flipmode Squad, Twista, Juvenile, Brand Nubian, Outkast, Juice, Profound, Q-Tip, Da Brat, Shyne, 50 Cent, Kanye West, Lupe Fiasco, and the list goes on. Basically it’s classic material and a must to have on your computer if you love hip-hop music in any sense. I should really start charging for connectin the dots like this, I’m a motherfuckin music blog wordsmith motherfucking lyrical genius!
