COLUMBIA NIGHTS – STORMY WEATHER

Aight y’all. This some schitt right here doe! Blind I fave Hayling has Voltron’d  with Sarai Abdul-Malik & John E Daise  to form Columbia Nights. Their first single is a cover of Little Dragons “Stormy Weather” & it a perfect homage to the o.g. In a moment where music is too often thought of as nothing more than hard drive space, there seems to be a severe lack of soul in our sounds. With a few notable exceptions, there has been a dearth of creative imagination and thought behind the content saturating blogs, iPods, and PCs. More than ever, music is increasingly seen as a disposable and artists are only as relevant as their last viral video. In the 21st century, the true musician’s task is to create art that lasts.

Drawing from soul, hip-hop, R&B, electronica, and jazz, Columbia Nights hopes to add to the conversation by offering a fresh take on a timeless tradition. Co-producers and former bandmates John E Daise and Hayling Price made their rounds in Philadelphia playing the city’s trademark blend of neo-soul, and vocalist Sarai Abdul-Malik met the pair midway through her studies at Howard University’s jazz department. Joined by a love of vinyl, laughter and Thai iced tea, the Washington D.C. based trio creates a unique sound rooted in balance; their sounds represent a synthesis of the analog and the digital, the bright and the dark, the warm and the wintry.

This project is the culmination of almost two years of listening, writing, composing, and recording between three friends together on one special journey. Are you ready to join them on the ride?

I couldn’t really figure out the tone I wanted this volume of Rendezvous to have. So it was fitting when Noah sent me the cover artwork and it looked like braille or an encryption you have to decode.  However, after playing the songs in this one, I have to say it’s one of my favorites I’ve done in a while. Songs like “Manifestations” aren’t conventionally “sexy” but to me there’s something sultry about them. These mixes in general are like a trip inside our minds and what moves us each. Last Monday, April 11th at 10:43AM, my daughter Ajané arrived into the world. It was the most beautifulest thing in the world without a doubt. Being “on call” for the whole month of March & April kinda put a roadblock in my head as to what ‘theme’ I wanted to execute for Aprils NKD & as I pondered the thoughts I lowkey was already playing the soundtrack & not even knowing it. Playing songs that I felt related to what I was going through or have gone through or what I want to achieve as a man & as a father to my children. About a week before the 15th (sorry for the delay… been busy changing diapers n schitt. pun.) I finally decided to dedicate this months NKD to the babies. The children. The kids! But no… not on some Yo Gabba Gabba or Kids Sing Along schitt… naw… on some grown folks – grown biz – type of musical growth if you will. Whether you are a mother or a father, raising your sons or daughters, this edition goes harder to marauder & slaughter any biologicals that don’t bother. I breaks water! hahaha Naw pho trill tho… I’m on Cloud 9000 & 99! Blind I For The Kids… literally.

DANDIGGITY PRESENTS: ECLECTICUTS VOL.27

Front, back, side to side 2010 has been quite the ride (rhyme). The first year of the new decade wasn’t the smoothest, but I think it was great for new beginnings. With music advancing (and sometimes echoing back to the past) at a rapid pace it’s good to remind ourselves that even with the abundance of tunes out there always concentrate on the timeless and memorable. Thanks for sticking with me these last few years, and hopefully in the future to come.
