KUBUS & JOYA MOOI -MR. SINSTER EP

Internally, there are certain artists the Blind I staff gets particularly excited about.  Dutch singer Joya Mooi is one of them. So when she emailed us her new EP effort (with producer Kubus) Mr. Sinister, we started buzzing immediately. It’s way more electronic than her debut Hard Melk, which we fell in love with. But it definitely shows her range. In her own words:

Mr. Sinister is an EP inspired by the book Lord of the Barnyard written by Tristan Egolf. Egolf tells a intriging story that captivated producer Kubus and singer Joya Mooi. They started creating tracks with the different chapters in the back of their minds. And of nowhere there was Mr. Sinister.

Late last year Blind I put action behind a dream which was to do an album with a handful of artists that we love. This was even before we went out to SXSW & did our Quality showcase. Our motto has always been “Quality Over Quantity,” & we take that very seriously around these parts. You can tell from each staff member’s individual comps to the posts we make. You can go to many sites & see the same thing. You come here & see something different. You have respecognized this since we stepped onto the scene 4 years ago and have become our beloved “faithful.” We appreciate you all. Hi Everyone. What can I say–it’s been quite a month. For starters, Blind I celebrated our first SXSW showcase (Check out the pictures here) and it was incredible to be in the presence of musical greatness.  It has been a whirlwind for me personally these past few weeks, dealing with moments of jubilation and euphoria to death, grief and setbacks. Music has been my window seat. This compilation was due Monday but I needed to gather my thoughts and get the sound right. It starts out mellow and soothing and ends a bit more chaotic–just how it’s sounded in my head. I hope you relate somehow. Tracks/link next door.

I can’t stop playing Joya Mooi.  I first discovered her when I saw this video for her first single, “When I Take a Step Back” from her debut album Hard Melk. This ode to heartbreak, which most of us can relate to, struck me visually with the faded scenes and sun panning o the songstress. Her voice tip-toes over her music, recalling Jill Scott at times and Yukimi Nagano in others.
