ESTELLE DARLINGS & DJ TRAUMA: #IALMOSTMADEAMIXTAPE

It must be something about the summer. All of these smooth mixtapes keep popping up everywhere. Estelle, the Brit songstress and DJ Trauma collaborated for this set of tracks she’s been wanting the public to hear. Slight late pass on this one because it came out last week, but we were too busy cooking out, pardon!  In her intro she says she wants to be known for more than the woman behind “American Boy.” So here’s her stab at it while we wait on her next album All Eyes on Me. So many people have taken a crack at Weldon Irvine’s “Morning Sunrise” (Hov, Lupe, etc.) and since it’s one of my favorite songs, I appreciate hearing it in various forms. On “Dear London” (she kind of) raps on the beat, paying homage to her hometown. Pretty cool stuff here. Lots of familiar samples. Check it out.

THE ROOTS – DOIN IT AGAIN (F/ JOHN LEGEND)

It’s a bold feat to take an instant classic like John Legend’s “Again” and use it to create a hip-hop joint, but if anyone could do it, you know The Roots could. And voilá, we have “Doin It Again” from the greatest hip-hop band’s upcoming album How I Got Over. So far it’s shaping up to be nothing short of spectacular and nothing short of what we’ve grown to expect from The Roots. Illadelph I see you!

UNRELEASED: COMMON – STRANGE FRUIT (FEAT. JOHN LEGEND) (PRODUCED BY KANYE WEST)

Here’s some unreleased Common featuring John Legend and produced by Kanye West that didn’t make it to the final cut of Finding Forever, most likely due to the Nina Simone sample. Who knows. Dope shit though. Chicago run it! I love that the internet allows a venue for great songs that can’t legally make it to albums to still be heard. Don’t you? Partake.

CONSEQUENCE – WHATEVER U WANT (G.O.O.D. MUSIC REMIX)

The G.O.O.D. music fam drops a remix to Consequence‘s ‘Whatever U Want” single, featuring Kanye West, Common, Kid Cudi, Big Sean, and John Legend. Damn G what about GLC and Really Doe? Salty. Either way, it’s a nice simple little remix…nothing to it really, although the collaboration alone is really the promo vehicle for this joint. Guess when you get to a certain level in music you can drop whatever you want (no pun intended). Indulge!
