This month I decided to flip the script & keep it off this NKD. Get it? No scripts… just beats. Thus, No Knows Beats! From my favorite producers past, present & future. This cover is quite special to me as well because it is a painting of me done by my brother like no other Dee Jae Pa’este of Konscious Klothing & he was kind enough to let me use it for this months NKD art. (I mean… IT IS ME tho hahahaha). I have been bumping this all day while I was working on the back cover & it is damn good designing music… or work music… or whatever you use it for. Burn a CD, drop it on your mp3 players & cypher with your homies while you cruise the block or BBQ it up… or just stfu & listen.

This has been some years in the making. I have been wanting to dedicate my Feb NKD‘s to Jay Dee since I started doing NKD but it’s always been so difficult to pick n choose my favorite songs from my favorite artist, in this case it being Mr.Yancey himself. I literally sat there and debated heavily over some heaters & had to narrow it down to 40 of my most loved Dilla beats of all time. True Dilla fans should have the majority of this months edition, however like I said, I took my all time faves & put em in one home. Some – the actual songs, some – just the beats. This is for the faithfuls, so with that being said there isn’t a back cover this month. No track list either. It’s ALL DILLA PRODUCED! So from here on out… get used to Feb being like this.

J DILLA DOCUMENTARY PART 1 BY STUSSY

Here’s part one of a pretty decent documentary put together by the good people at Stussy on the life of the late J Dilla from the viewpoint of some people who were fortunate enough to share moments with him personally. NEW DILLA ALBUM TO COME OUT THIS SUMMER!

URB MAG just Twitted that a new J Dilla album will be released this summer on Pitchfork. I’m geeked!! Peep what they talkin bout…

Like Tupac, J Dilla’s prolific creative habits resulted in a slew of unreleased material left behind in the wake of his passing. According to Pitchfork, an album of some of these unreleased beats entitled Jay $tay Paid is scheduled for a June 2nd release on Nature Sounds Records. The album is executive produced by Dilla’s mother, Maureen Yancey aka Ma Dukes.

“It wasn’t rushed, and it wasn’t haphazard,” she says. “This album combines what he did in the beginning of his career, what he did in some of our early hospital stays, which was very deep, and some stuff pulled from old floppy disks & DATs. It’s mind blowing…this is like the missing links to Dilla’s legacy.”

Dilla’s idol, Pete Rock, is handling the mixing and arrangement of the album’s 28 tracks. The album mostly consists of instrumentals, however a handful of Dilla friendly collaborators such as Raekwon, DOOM, and Black Thought are contributing vocals to the project.

NEW SCHITT!! DERT – CMYK

A short, but in-depth ep based on the four colors that make up the traditional printing process; cyan, magenta, yellow and black. Each track is a synaesthetic response translating the emotions each color evokes. CMYK marks Dert’s first project composing every track without the use of found samples or loops and delving deep into synth-based production. Every track features a “hook” or “refrain” buried low in the mix surrounded by a “wall of sound” created by layering keyboard parts and employing various methods of distortion. CMYK takes inspiration from the shoegaze genre of rock and artists such as My Bloody Valentine as well as the vocal stylings of J-Dilla on his track “Nothing Like This.”

My favorite track since he sent me the ‘sandbox-automatic’ version, immediatley was/is Magenta & I highly reccomend you press play on that lil button down there below this sentence.

DOING IT FOR DILLA + L.A. SUITE FOR MA DUKES

I was running around and forgot to put this up yesterday. Shepard Fairey of Obey/Obama Poster fame and artist B+ collaborated to create this special print of Dilla Dog in efforts to raise money for Ma Dukes. The print, of which only 400 were made, releases today and is going for $55. It’s 18 in x 24 in and can be picked up at Obey’s site. In conjunction with the poster, Miguel Atwood-Ferguson and Carlos Nino are hosting  “A Suite For Ma Dukes” with special guests House Shoes & J Rocc in L.A. on Sunday. Details for that event are also on the Obey site. As a preview they released footage of a jam session in preparation:

HAPPY BORN DAY TO THE G.O.A.T. JAY DEE/ J DILLA!!

Today is James Yancey aka Jay Dee aka J Dilla’s birthday. He would have been 35 years young today, & as I type this I still can’t believe that I am typing this. It is still so hard to believe that He is no longer physically with us, but yet his music, soul & spirit live through out those who knew what time it was when it came to the G.O.A.T. So instead of mourning, we rejoice in the beautiful art that Jay blessed us all with before He left & are eternally grateful for it. So today, We here @ Blind I encourage you to play some Dilla @ every chance you get today & TURN IT UP!! If u smoke… then put one up in the air for Dilla!
