BLIND I EXCLUSIVE AUDIO+VIDEO: REY RESURRECCION – SPACESHIPS [P REMIX]

So the story goes like this: My brotha Rey Resurreccion remixed his Spaceships song using Portishead as his tools. Schitt was too on point & I told him how it would be dope to sync it to his video as a special exclusive remix/prelude to June 15th/NKD/No Knows Portishead. & VOILA! The O.G. still bangs… but THIS one is just too damn ice cold & gives the whole video a completely different vibe & emotion. We hope you enjoy. Be sure to add Old Rust New Bang & Limitless to your music library too.

NEW YORK STATE OF MIND

When I was a kid in Cali, my older brother and I listened to a lot of music out of New York. Back then, the East Coast was in the lead and Rap City was in heavy rotation. Even in elementary school, I was buying albums and dissecting them on my pH scale for quality. The hip-hop seed was planted early.

NEW SCHITT (THE BOARDROOM)

The Boardroom (Myspace) is a Chicago-based Hip Hop group hellbent on flipping the industry on it’s ass. I must say, they come at the game from a distinctly different angle, one that encompasses an embrace of the changing face of the industry. They remind me of a throwback to that gritty, early 90′s New York style shit that had everyone mean mugging people when they walked past em on the street. Add that to a crazy passion and a look that’s right in tune with the cutting edge acts on the current cusp of things, and you got the Boardroom. Hate it or love it, I think Chicago people can vouch and say that you can’t deny the grind these dudes have, which is more admirable than anything else I’m seeing from half assed rap groups nowadays. Check out & download two of their joints Blind I has for ya’ll, “Ain’t a Prolum” and “Turn It Out“. Drop em some comments and let us know what you think about em too. We’ve also got two videos from The Boardroom too after the jump. Chicago stand up! Ea$y!

Hip-Hop Moving Forward (?)

Is Hip-Hop dead? With the lines between Hip-Hop and Pop blurring more and more each day, does Hip-Hop have a viable future? And who is responsible for preserving that future?

Sometimes, I feel that Hip-Hop will go the way of Blues, Jazz and Rock and Roll: created, perfected and virtually abandoned by Black folks like orphan children left in the care of well-intentioned others  who can only provide so much authenticity.

Once the voice of an oppressed minority, Hip-Hop is a ghost of it’s former self. The pimping of poverty and violence for the delight of a global audience who think “Black folks act like that“.

I’m curious: in the wake of Soulja Boy, rappin’ teddy bears and the entry of “bling-bling” in the Webster’s Dictionary….what do YOU predict for Hip-Hop in five years? Ten? Can the Lupe Fiascos and 9th Wonders and Murs’s of the world save the genre? Or is it time for us to move on to the next beat?

Modern Day Sambo

The Sis is you love to hate is back! Pardon my disappearance, just had a lot of real life iddish to deal with. But like Al B. Sure, I’m in effect mode and I’m dusting of my gloves. Who gwan test?

Hip-Hop is the new American Minstrelsy. In the days of Blackface, we were told “You know you people act like this. Have a laugh and stop taking youselves so seriously!” Now, we’re told that guns, slums, violence and drugs are the markers of the authentic black experience, and anyone who dare step out and criticize the genre is a race traitor, or too removed from the community to understand.

Standing In the B-Girl Stance

Rarely can you find a gallery fully dedicated to bold, street-focused, abstract art from WOMEN all over the world. The walls of New York City’s Showroom Gallery were adorned with unique pieces ranging from graffiti art to fashion, to romantic portraits and cityscapes.Hip-Hop pulsed through the canvas at the Crossover event put on by YOUNITY. The newly established organization aims to provide an international forum for female artists, designers and photographers to showcase their work. Created by graf artist Toofly and Alice Mizrachi, YOUNITY will break down barriers for aspiring young artists and give them the resources to grow.

Crossover represents the network and growing communal support for YOUNITY initiatives. Reinventing graffiti. Giving female artists a forum. Spicing up a bland white wall. The art is dope and it’s for sale. The pieces you see come from women all over the world from South Africa to Europe.

Everything from a detailed Michael Jackson on the wall to an old-school high-top Reebok made out of cloth were reminders of the way our culture has permeated the arts. So give the organization a nod (http://www.theyounity.com) and check out the pictures.
