GIL SCOTT-HERON
FLWRPT-SAMPLE FOOD VOL. 2
If you’re a fan of Brooklyn-based group The Stuyvesants, then chances are you’re familiar with Darien Birks a.k.a. Flwrpt. Every now and then he drops these really cool mixes with rare gems and impeccable song choices! Sample Food Vol. 2 kicks off appropriately with the Otis Redding classic “Try A Little Tenderness” which Watch The Throne has recently revived. I happen to enjoy discovering the origins of samples and many of you Blind I Faithfuls are music historians, critics and even producers. So this one is for you. Tracklist after the jump.Partake!

When I heard about the passing of the legendary Gil Scott-Heron, I decided that it was time for another installment of my old-school Innervisions compilations. I grew up in a musical house with a father who collects records. As a kid and even now, the minute you walk into my parents’ house you will be greeted with a stereo blasting the classics. I have a fond appreciation for all of it. Here are some songs that put me in a nostalgic space mixed with some newer music that complements it well. I’m kind of in l-o-v-e with this playlist. Enjoy.

Last Monday, April 11th at 10:43AM, my daughter Ajané arrived into the world. It was the most beautifulest thing in the world without a doubt. Being “on call” for the whole month of March & April kinda put a roadblock in my head as to what ‘theme’ I wanted to execute for Aprils NKD & as I pondered the thoughts I lowkey was already playing the soundtrack & not even knowing it. Playing songs that I felt related to what I was going through or have gone through or what I want to achieve as a man & as a father to my children. About a week before the 15th (sorry for the delay… been busy changing diapers n schitt. pun.) I finally decided to dedicate this months NKD to the babies. The children. The kids! But no… not on some Yo Gabba Gabba or Kids Sing Along schitt… naw… on some grown folks – grown biz – type of musical growth if you will. Whether you are a mother or a father, raising your sons or daughters, this edition goes harder to marauder & slaughter any biologicals that don’t bother. I breaks water! hahaha Naw pho trill tho… I’m on Cloud 9000 & 99! Blind I For The Kids… literally.

*PBBT!’S SMORGASBORD NOVEMBER 2010

It only makes sense to drop a Smorgasbord on the national Day of the Feast right? You know how I do, just something for you to rock to for the next couple. And since I know you’re probably double-stuffing your bellies (hell, I know I am) I decided to follow suit and double stuff this comp with 2 discs of straight fonk, with the second disc actually being a personal playlist I compiled while zooted on vacation. Each song kinda represents how I was feeling at a certain point in time. Yeah I know its corny. Just download and go eat your stuffin’ ya jive turkey. Tracklist and download in the basement watching the game with Uncle Roy an ‘nem.

What can I say, I was anxious to drop this one. A truckload of heat was made readily available this last week, and therefore I HAD to incorporate it all into this month’s Blind I Says GO! The motivation behind this one was fresh & new, meaning the wardrobe has been flipped, the summer is here, and it’s time to work hard and play hard. We’re talking new joints from Kid Cudi, Drake, Black Milk, Vic Spencer and I, Gil Scott-Heron, Kanye West, Phil Adé, Francis and the Lights, The Roots, Talib Kweli, Sean Price, Black Sheep, Mark Ronson, Janelle Monaé, Alicia Keys, Hollyweerd, Dirty Money, and Dam Funk. Whoa. Time to indulge….

Hey! Once again, it’s that time for my monthly compilation. After we lost Michael Jackson, I pulled out a lot of old soul music to stroll down memory lane a bit.  I’m an 80′s baby but this music was consistently BLARING throughout the house when I was a kid. It feels like home when I listen. I’ve also been feeling inspired by the summertime and the inner-city beauty in my Harlem backyard. You will recognize some of these because the classics always get sampled, but I picked some low-key ones too. I definitely spent more time putting this together than I normally do so let me know if the music moves you the way it moves me. XO
