MY MIC SOUNDS NICE: A TRUTH ABOUT WOMEN IN HIP-HOP

A couple weeks ago, I attended a screening for BET’s first ever original music documentary, “My Mic Sounds Nice: A Truth About Women In Hip-Hop“. Directed by Ava DuVernay, the film takes a loving, yet critical look at the history of sisters in Rap music. It is equal parts celebration of pioneers and those carrying the torch and lamentation over the lack of estrogen in today’s Hip-Hop spaces.

Commentary is provided primarily by woman rappers, including MC Lyte, YoYo, Trina, Salt n’ Pepa, The Lady of Rage, Diamond, Eve, Missy, etc. Other heads weighing in include Kevin Lyles, Joan Morgan, Questlove, Glennisha Morgan of The Fembassy and Russell Simmons. I was really excited to hear the thoughts Jean Grae, Tiye Pheonix and a few other female rappers who aren’t as familiar to the BET audience (there is a great independent artist roll-call at the end as well).

NPR INTERVIEW: LAURYN HILL SPEAKS

It was hard for me to not react dramatically when I began reading this. As a writer, sometimes I fear that the internet has grown into such a dominant force, that it will cause these kinds of stories to become obsolete. But, like a breath of fresh air, Zoe Chace interviewed people Lauryn Hill has worked with for context and she also got Ms. Hill to talk. Everyone knows this is no longer an easy thing to do.  She sounds like she’s ready revisit the music world. Listen here and hit the skip for the entire article. Major props to NPR. FRANCIS AND THE LIGHTS | LIVE FOOTAGE IN CHICAGO + IT’LL BE BETTER

Francis and The Lights. Oh buddy. I love it when artists we endorse persist to make amazing music and take over the world bit by bit. The talented group of artists, fronted by Francis Starlite, have been making recent waves as an opening act for Drake on his current tour, but we at Blind I were hip to the game before all that. I must stunt for my team.

Since their introduction to Blind I and the last time they were featured on the site as Spotlight Artists, they’ve been working hard, doing live shows, and most recently dropping their new EP “It’ll Be Better“, available now on iTunes. They sent us over a free MP3 of one of my FAVORITE joints that they had a snippet-dressingroom-recording of awhile ago called “For Days“, now in CD quality and just as dope for you guys to check out/download:
