SMIRNOFF PRESENTS SUBSESSIONS: A JOURNEY THROUGH 30 YEARS OF HIP HOP

Fresh kids, what it do? It has indeed been a long time and I am truly sorry that I left you! For those who don’t know, I’m Sister Toldja and I’m oh so proud to be back in the Blind-I building! Reporting live from Planet Brooklyn, I have returned with my special blend of smart mouth social commentary, occasional recklessness and a peek at what’s poppin’ in the Big Apple. Shout out to No, Suli and everyone else for leaving the door open for a sister to return!

Last week, I was fortunate enough to “Be There” for  Subsessions: A Journey Through 30 Years Of Hip Hop at the NY Transit Museum, which was sponsored by the good folks at Smirnoff, the world’s #1 vodka.  The exclusive crowed boogied to the sounds of guest DJs Jermaine Dupri & Stones Throw’s Peanut Butter Wolf and emcee duties were performed by none other than Biz Markie.  Greg Nice of Nice and Smooth, Sadat X, Prince Paul and other heads were all on the scene. It was a unique journey back to the essence and looking towards the future, made doper by the fact that the NY Transit Museum is actually an old subway station. Bucket drummer Jared Crawford warmed up the crowd. Biz kicked a few freestyles and Hip-Hop string quartet Nuttin But Stringz made beautiful music. Smirnoff cocktails were flowing, Facebook pictures were taken and memories were created as we celebrated the past 30 years of the art of Hip-Hop and it’s NYC roots.

I had the opportunity to chat briefly with the Biz about his time in the game and his hopes for Hip-Hop’s future.

FREESTYLE FELLOWSHIP | PROJECT BLOWED 15 YR ANNY

I grew up on RUN DMC & N.W.A. in L.A. & when I was rolling with The Tunnelrats, my man Dax put me onto Freestyle Fellowship. To Whom It May Concern & Intercity Griots would become the only things I would play & study. These 4 men gave birth to a whole new sound & style that to this day many try to imitate but none can compare. It’s crazy to me that Project Blowed just celebrated 15 years of existence as a separate entity from The Good Life, which was home to Freestyle Fellowship as well as a hip hop Apollo if you will. I swear… I can sit here & continue writing a novel about this whole movement. Anyways, much respecognition to my fam Shames Worthy & Dert for the link.

LUPE FIASCO – SAY SOMETHING + ALL THE WAY TURNT UP (FREESTYLES)

lfAmidst the jokers and fakers, Lupe Fiasco has remained the truth in the booth. His talent displayed on tracks is often effortless, and these two new freestyles, “Say Something” over thew new Timbaland x Drake track, and “All The Way Turnt Up” are no exceptions. I for one can’t wait until We Are Lasers drops, but until then Chicagoans have something to look forward to this weekend, because Lupe is performing on Halloween at the Congress Theatre. Indulge in the two new freestyles!

THE BEST OF BAD BOY RADIO FREESTYLES (1997-2007)

Yeah, it’s that serious. A few days ago, I took my quest to find the elusive All About The Bad Boys track to Twitter in efforts to try and find it for my catalogue and the world’s pleasure. I was directed to Mr. Mike Love, who was one-half of the Bad Boys on WGCI during their heyday, and he threw me the oop of all oops with the record. I, being the gentleman that I am, threw it to my homie Andrew over at FSD and let him run wild with it. A few days later, Mike hits me with THIS gem. Ridiculous collection of freestyles recorded on the radio show from artists like Common, Crucial Conflict, Lord Tariq & Peter Gunz, Fat Joe & Big Pun, Flipmode Squad, Twista, Juvenile, Brand Nubian, Outkast, Juice, Profound, Q-Tip, Da Brat, Shyne, 50 Cent, Kanye West, Lupe Fiasco, and the list goes on. Basically it’s classic material and a must to have on your computer if you love hip-hop music in any sense. I should really start charging for connectin the dots like this, I’m a motherfuckin music blog wordsmith motherfucking lyrical genius! Mr Mike Love has some more to say on the topic after the jump, along with a link to download The Best Of Bad Boy Radio Freestyles. Don’t act like I never gave you nothing, internet!

DJ EKO – ELECTRO YUM TURBO!

electro-yumfinalBlind I faithful & good friend DJ EKO or “ekogirl” has blessed us all with a new mix perfect for the weather that is warming up too damn soon (is it just me or does it feel like summer is already here?)! For those unaware, DJ Eko is a staple in our culture. She has had a successful show on KZSC Santa Cruz for over 12 years (in that time, became the stations Hip Hop Director), wrote reviews for Urb Magazine, worked with record label, Nu Gruv Alliance (working with Peanut Butter Wolf, StonesThrow, Quannum, Aceyalone, Abstract Rude, J5 & Zion I) & even had a show on KCSB while she was transplanted in L.A. for a quick minute. Today you can still tune in to KZSC when u are in the bay to peep her wonderful show or catch her rockin the 1’s & 2’s LIVE @ all the various hot spots!

So back to this mix! In her own words, Electro Yum Turbo! is:

“I have something for you to roll in your ride to in the sunshine! Check it out. I told ya’ll I’m all over the place musically. Last one was downtempo and this mix is from the pendulum swinging the absolute opposite direction. ELECTRO YUM: TURBO is bailelectrofreestyledancehallcraziness. 70 minutes of upbeat. 40 tracks of energy. Not for the faint at heart!” -Ekogirl
