MUHSINAH-HOW GREAT

We recently posted the sampler for Muhsinah’s new EP, Gone. Now, she’s released the first single, “How Great” which you can listen to and download below. Since she’s been MIA, as expressed in the blurb we posted, Muhsinah been going through changes and growing. So far, the new music seems to reflect this.

NEZ & RIO: LET’S GET ILL EP

For years, NEZ AND RIO have made a name for themselves as a production duo, working with fellow Chicagoans Kidz in The Hall, Mikkey Halstead, $ulaiman and others. When Rio first told me they would be making their debut as rappers, I knew they would come out the gate with something major. Beat wise, Let’s Get Ill telegraphs the early 90s (See: Missy & Tim), laced with their signature: synths, snares and  sampling. Lyrically, they’re equally as impressive, distinguishing themselves through witty exchanges. Hit the skip for tracklist and links. Get into it.

THE WEEKND-HOUSE OF BALLOONS

Hello all. My apologies for not posting this sooner. I’ve been out of commission and under the weather! This debut mixtape from Toronto duo The Weeknd is pretty much amazing. House of Balloons weaves in and out of electronica, lo-fi and R&B. If you  combined Drake, Francis & The Lights, and Sonnymoon, the result might sound something this. Sexy and well worth the listen. Partake.

COULTRAIN-GODMUSTBEABOOGIEMAN EP

So many impressive hip hop projects have been released this year, but I’ve been secretly hoping more R&B would arrive in my inbox. Then St. Louis native, Coultrain, aka. Seymour Liberty answered my call with the EP GodMustBeABoogieMan. It’s Coultrain at his finest; soulful voice echoing through the speakers, making each track feel like a summer lullaby.  He collaborated with Black Spade, Teeko, J1 and others. The tracklist, artwork and all of the goodness is contained in the zip. Partake!

TANYA AUCLAIR-THRUM EP

If you’re Feist, Kissey Asplund or Sia fan, you may attach pretty quickly to British singer-songwriter Tanya Auclair. On her first EP, Thrum, she coos softly over whimsical, folksy melodies. The guitar and gentle drum rhythms have that experimental, stripped-down-and-recorded-in-the-basement feel, which contributes to the lo-fi energy of the mix. In her own words:

“A road-trip round Sweden set this fever off in me. Initially it was an experiment, taking some of my favourite things about music - primal rhythms, loads of vocal harmonies and straight-up melodies – and it turned into its own little beast, making me dig deeper, to where everything thrums.” – Tanya Auclair

CODY CHESNUTT-DO BETTER TO THE YOUNG

It feels good to have soul singer Cody Chesnutt’s EP, Black Skin/No Value en route to fans, who have been waiting for new music. It has been roughly eight years since The Headphone Masterpiece was released.

I had a great discussion with him last year, knee-deep in rural Florida, about music, politics and the direction his career is heading. We all have a lot to look forward to from him.  He’s thoughtful and deliberate about what he gives to the people. This sounds like something Marvin Gaye would have done in his time.

Cody will perform for the first time  in years July 3 in Brooklyn. Hit the skip for details.
