I really outdid myself with this one. This…..right here….is my…..most fluid, themed, consistent BISG compilation yet! August’s edition of Blind I Says GO! is giving love to the joints you love but forget to revisit….the Yin to the typical Yang of selections that jump out at us on out favorite records….yes that’s right, the INTERLUDE! When I came up with this concept I had a few special ones in mind that I’d always loved, but I had no idea I’d be able to pick 40 tracks that combined into an hour-long mindgasm of sonic delicacy. You like my wordplay I know you do. All the greats are here along for the ride too — 112, Little Brother, Hi-Tek, Usher, Talib Kweli, Sa-Ra, Brand New Funk, Justin Timberlake, Sonnymoon, I, CED, Common, Bilal, The Neptunes, N.E.R.D., Group Home, Outkast, SWV, Dwele, Drake, Missy Elliott, Kelis, Timbaland & Magoo, John Legend, Mayer Hawthorne, Yesterday’s New Quintet, Erykah Badu, Diddy, B.I.G., Madlib, Jay-Z, Janelle Monaé, Jake One, Dilla, Gang Starr, Dimlite, Dert, Constrobuz, Beat Maker Beat, Sol+10….I mean C’MON SON! You already know what you need to do.

Whenever people reference Blind I, or the kind of music we post, especially in our monthly compilations, the word “taste” comes up a lot. Individually and collectively we all have a very specific ear and that’s what draws you in to either hate or love it. Sometimes when I put mine together, I try to switch things up a bit to reach and satisfy different tastes, but this month, it’s just me. I catered to what I wanted to hear. I took my time pairing them together, contemplated and edited accordingly. Sit back, put your feet up and play it loud. (Drake voice) Y-y-y-y-you can thank me now.

DEAD PREZ-REVOLUTIONARY BUT GANGSTA GRILLZ MIXTAPE
Wow can you believe Let’s Get Free came out a decade ago? Goodness, that makes me feel old. Anyway, to mark the occasion, Dead Prez teamed up with DJ Drama for Turn Off The Radio Vol. 4: Revolutionary But Gangsta Grillz. When I hit play I was shocked to hear them rhyming over Drake, Gucci Mane, M.I.A. and other unexpected instrumentals. Of course they’re lighting each one up lyrically and the messages in their music definitely uplift. A rarity these days. Dope!

THANK HIM LATER, ANSWER ME NOW
What’s with this Drake guy? Seriously? Or, rather, what’s all the fuss about him? What is it about a marginal rapper/terrible singer that has so many folks losing their minds? And why am I so obsessed with figuring that out?
There doesn’t seem to be much in-between with this kid. Folks either think he’s the wackest thing ever ( “Hip-Hop’s version of a boy band”=LMFAO) or he’s a breath of fresh air. I suppose it shouldn’t come as a surprise that an artist who reflects the majority of Hip-Hop’s listening audience would one day have a day in the sun. Street credibility is quickly becoming a thing of the past; listeners have finally accepted that most of their favorite gangsters are flat-out lying anyway (shout out to Officer Ricky) and aren’t as pressed to vicariously live out their hood fantasies through rappers who are essentially doing the same thing. Enter Wheelchair Jimmy.
Last week, Talib Kweli tweeted “Drake is a mainstream rapper who aint scared to rhyme about feelings & aint frontin’ like a goon. Aint that what they want?” That gave me some pause. I mean, as far as rappers who are gonna have the ears of a nation of impressionable kids go, I’d far rather have them listening to Drizzy than Jeezy. On the flip, his work is still wrought with ‘bitches’, ‘hoes’ and consummate materialism. Two points for having the courage to be emo, but the sisters are still getting the second class treatment and we’re still obsessing over buying shit. And he still has that fascination with death that his “gangster” contemporaries have. What’s up with that?

What can I say, I was anxious to drop this one. A truckload of heat was made readily available this last week, and therefore I HAD to incorporate it all into this month’s Blind I Says GO! The motivation behind this one was fresh & new, meaning the wardrobe has been flipped, the summer is here, and it’s time to work hard and play hard. We’re talking new joints from Kid Cudi, Drake, Black Milk, Vic Spencer and I, Gil Scott-Heron, Kanye West, Phil Adé, Francis and the Lights, The Roots, Talib Kweli, Sean Price, Black Sheep, Mark Ronson, Janelle Monaé, Alicia Keys, Hollyweerd, Dirty Money, and Dam Funk. Whoa. Time to indulge….

FRANCIS AND THE LIGHTS | LIVE FOOTAGE IN CHICAGO + IT’LL BE BETTER
Francis and The Lights. Oh buddy. I love it when artists we endorse persist to make amazing music and take over the world bit by bit. The talented group of artists, fronted by Francis Starlite, have been making recent waves as an opening act for Drake on his current tour, but we at Blind I were hip to the game before all that. I must stunt for my team.
Since their introduction to Blind I and the last time they were featured on the site as Spotlight Artists, they’ve been working hard, doing live shows, and most recently dropping their new EP “It’ll Be Better“, available now on iTunes. They sent us over a free MP3 of one of my FAVORITE joints that they had a snippet-dressingroom-recording of awhile ago called “For Days“, now in CD quality and just as dope for you guys to check out/download:

On top of that, I got a chance to check them out while they were in Chicago for a performance and my homie Nick Castle from Jermaine Productions was able to get some good performance footage of some joints you can get on It’ll Be Better — hit the jump to check out the footage and preview the new EP!
