Today we celebrate the birth and amazing career of the G.O.A.T. Jay Dee (J Dilla) born James Dewitt Yancey. Every year I have been making these posts & it still is crazy to me, but let’s not even go there… instead let’s all celebrate the life & musical career of a musical legend that many of were blessed to watch & listen to his growth. He changed the game with his many styles & approach. He made everyone around him work much harder because of his dedication to the basement. He will forever hold a special place in all our hearts & ears as well as history. D2S homie DJ Haylow made this video montage of Dilla as well as the 1st  Dilla tribute mix he did that you can grab after the jump! LONG LIVE DILLA!!

Here is the link to the mix which I promised to send yesterday. Some of yall may already have this one, if so, pass it along! This mix was recorded in 2005, before my transition to serato, so it is 100% Vinyl (which is notable for today’s standards!) It also features the Pharrell interview which I referred to in yesterdays email…
On a side note, I learned long after I recorded this mix that there is ONE beat on this mixtape that is NOT a Jay Dee/Dilla beat. See if you can guess which beat it is!

Peace as always..

February has become the annual month when music fans around the world celebrate the life and music of the Late Great James Yancey (J Dilla) because his birth and his untimely death both happened in Feb (February 7, 1974 – February 10, 2006).

Throughout the years, I have recorded 2 mixtapes that pay homage to Dilla, one recorded in 2005, and the other recorded in 2008. As a side story, I interviewed Pharrell of The Neptunes/N*E*R*D* in 2005, and up to that point, I was always a huge fan of Dilla, even dating back to his days when he was Jay Dee. In that interview, Pharrell was naming different producers, and when Dilla’s name came up, he called Dilla ‘The Beat King of All Time’. For some one like Pharrell to say that at the height of his commercial success resonated with me; the one who everyone in mainstream music THOUGHT was the best, was paying homage to someone that pop culture barely knew.

Simply put. Dilla is the Beat King of All Time
