The Soul System EP is the newest project from Detroit’s Nametag, produced entirely by Black Bethoven. The concept of the Soul System is, “One producer, One emcee, One concept…One EP.” It came about originally with Black Bethoven preparing to release an instrumental CD to follow up 2009’s Da Ear Hustle but with an idea inspired by Dub MD, the emcee and producer decided to team up and create a music piece that provides food for thought you wouldn’t find in your local grocery aisle. With tracks like “Time” which is the EP’s leading single, Nametag and Black Bethoven prove that soul music has a permanent spot in the hip hop genre. via 2dopeboyz

R.I.P. BAATIN

Just as we started to get excited about the upcoming  SlumVillage release, another Detroit talent leaves the world too soon.  Baatin was reportedly excited about being involved in the project and SV  just wrapped  the video for the single “Cloud Nine.” It’s sad that he won’t be here to celebrate but I’m sure he and Dilla will be smiling in Heaven.

Newly signed Stones Throw artist Mayer Hawthorne is killin’ it. Really folks, THIS IS SOUL MUSIC. Not the garbage on the FM but real down to earth Soul.

The Detroit native, now LA transplant, is making waves with the likes of Gilles Peterson, Mark Ronson, and music lovers everywhere. I love this dudes story. He was making this music by himself, for only the few folks to appreciate it (family & friends) and then gets picked up by PB Wolf to create a whole album’s worth of material. Living the dream? Hell yes!

Plus not only is he a dope musician and singer as Mayer Hawthorne (plays all the instruments himself) but he’s a dope producer with his group Now On and DJ’s under the name Haircut. Dude is definitely not sleeping.

FINALE – A PIPE DREAM AND A PROMISE

Finale was an auto engineer who worked for the Big 3 in Detroit and decided to throw himself full-fledged into the rap scene after J Dilla co-signed him at the Detroit Electronic Music Festival.  His official debut album entitled A Pipe Dream And A Promise features production from a handful of great producers including Dilla, Black Milk, Nottz, Oddisee, Flying Lotus, Waajeed, and only 1 guest emcee, Invincible.   A Pipe Dream And A Promise will be released on April 7th via Interdependent Media.
