NAMETAG & BLACK BETHOVEN – THE SOUL SYSTEM (FreEP)

This lil ep is soo fresh.. is you heard this cat on my ML6 you know he got major flava.. I guess it runs in the family , being the cousin of black milk.

The Soul System EP is the newest project from Detroit’s Nametag, produced entirely by Black Bethoven. The concept of the Soul System is, “One producer, One emcee, One concept…One EP.” It came about originally with Black Bethoven preparing to release an instrumental CD to follow up 2009’s Da Ear Hustle but with an idea inspired by Dub MD, the emcee and producer decided to team up and create a music piece that provides food for thought you wouldn’t find in your local grocery aisle. With tracks like “Time” which is the EP’s leading single, Nametag and Black Bethoven prove that soul music has a permanent spot in the hip hop genre. via 2dopeboyz

ILL-LITERACY & BLIND-I PRESENT: DOYOUDONOTSEE?

I love working with the homies on progressive ways to share and collaborate on music. So in conjunction with my boys Ill-Literacy we decided to help them out on a song they brewed up this past month. Currently the song’s about 85% done but they felt like they could use the help from the global community in making it more polished. So musicians and producers with talent to spare, help us out!

Song, links, and details after the drop!

ARTIST SPOTLIGHT | KEYS N KRATES

The notoriety of Canada’s Keys n Krates is something real. In the last fews years they have been able to shake up the music scene and return us to the core of what makes a live performance enjoyable. Organic, raw, are just some of the words to describe their experience, but simply saying it’s a fun, yeah that works too. Here is an interview BLIND-I conducted with the guys in Santa Barbara, CA. Enjoy and support this band when their in your town next!

JOSE JAMES – CODE (PRODUCED BY FLYING LOTUS)

We dropped the video to the intro track from Jose James’ album “Black Magic” a few weeks ago, but the good people at Brownswood Recordings decided to let the MP3 version go for all of you who were wanting that. I know I was, it’s fantastic music to smoke fuck work to. Indulge thyself. And cop the album.

THE ROAD TO HELL…

I'm not posting the video either. You're welcome.

I noticed that no one else had posted  the new “We Are The World” on here. Probably because Blind-I prides itself on posting the best and the freshest music out there, not really terrible songs that make you  feel awkward and uncomfortable.

Not one but TWO rap blogs have “shut down” as a result of the most atrocious group effort that found Justin Beiber (who?), T-Pain (what?) and an auto-tuned Lil’ Wayne (WHY?) singing the 1985 classic. It was bad, real bad. Poor Michael Jackson. Way to shame him, guys.

Now, while I got a good giggle at how Rappers I Know and IllDoctrine took WATW25, it made me think about something that has been on my mind for a while. My generation is now in it’s mid 20’s-30’s. We were rather young  during the “Golden Era” of Hip-Hop,  the youngest group of people who actually remember when groups like A Tribe Called Quest and the Pharcyde got mainstream airplay. A lot of the current emcees who seem to have embraced the more “roots” Hip-Hop sound are from my peer group.  But despite our best efforts, Hip-Hop has become something very…diluted? Something very distant from the original rawness that galvanized a nation. How could it not change? It was once social commentary that happened to interest White suburban youth. Enter capitalism and market research and now much of what is today’s Hip Hop cultural product that is specifically designed for the tastes of White suburban youth. Black/hood life and expression molded to what consumers think it should look like. Modern minstrelsy. Not all of it, but a whole lot of it. › Read More…

SMIRNOFF PRESENTS SUBSESSIONS: A JOURNEY THROUGH 30 YEARS OF HIP HOP

Fresh kids, what it do? It has indeed been a long time and I am truly sorry that I left you! For those who don’t know, I’m Sister Toldja and I’m oh so proud to be back in the Blind-I building! Reporting live from Planet Brooklyn, I have returned with my special blend of smart mouth social commentary, occasional recklessness and a peek at what’s poppin’ in the Big Apple. Shout out to No, Suli and everyone else for leaving the door open for a sister to return!

Last week, I was fortunate enough to “Be There” for  Subsessions: A Journey Through 30 Years Of Hip Hop at the NY Transit Museum, which was sponsored by the good folks at Smirnoff, the world’s #1 vodka.  The exclusive crowed boogied to the sounds of guest DJs Jermaine Dupri & Stones Throw’s Peanut Butter Wolf and emcee duties were performed by none other than Biz Markie.  Greg Nice of Nice and Smooth, Sadat X, Prince Paul and other heads were all on the scene. It was a unique journey back to the essence and looking towards the future, made doper by the fact that the NY Transit Museum is actually an old subway station. Bucket drummer Jared Crawford warmed up the crowd. Biz kicked a few freestyles and Hip-Hop string quartet Nuttin But Stringz made beautiful music. Smirnoff cocktails were flowing, Facebook pictures were taken and memories were created as we celebrated the past 30 years of the art of Hip-Hop and it’s NYC roots.

I had the opportunity to chat briefly with the Biz about his time in the game and his hopes for Hip-Hop’s future.
