A TRIBE CALLED QUEST

10 YEARS ON THE ROAD WITH MOCHILLA

On Thursday, June 2nd, 2011, Peek Gallery in association with Noise Pop proudly presents an exclusive photo gallery IF IT FITS IN THE BACKPACK…10 Years On the Road with MOCHILLA. Between B+ and Coleman, Mochilla’s co-founders, the two have photographed some of music’s biggest icons, including Eminem, Lauryn Hill, Black Eyed Peas, DJ Shadow, MF Doom, Dilated Peoples, Blackalicious, David Axelrod, Mulatu Astatke, J.Dilla, EPMD, Snoop Dogg, Black Star (Mos Def & Talib Kweli), Damian Marley, Nas, A Tribe Called Quest, Madlib, Jay Electronica, and many others. Outside of their photography work, Mochilla developed into a full service production company, producing 3 groundbreaking music films which include KEEPINTIMEBRASILINTIME, and TIMELESS, all exploring the connection between Jazz/Soul/Funk/Brasilian music and the latter generation of DJs and producers who were so influenced by the previous generation’s music and aesthetic. Recent video projects include Eric Coleman’s video work w/ Jay Electronica in South Africa; B+’s travels w/ Nas & Damian Marley in Jamaica; an interview with the legendary Jose Maria “Curro” Fuentes (producer of some of Colombia’s most important musicians and orchestras on his own Discos Curro imprint); and their combined work on Banksy’s film, “Exit Through The Gift Shop.”

So this was an idea I had back in 2007. $ even made me a cover & everything & I never put it out. I decided to pull from that & make this to give y’all for this months edition of NKD, thus we going back in time, to a place where I was coming up as a MC I bumped the schitt outta everything on this edition. Broken tape decks & everythang! This past Saturday I was up @ my DJ W1shOne’s Audio Playground all day working on a mix of this for y’all but was not able to complete it the way I wanted to within such a short time, thus, expect a mix with songs that are not on this to be intertwined with some of these songs & more a lil down the road this year. Ill drop it randomly so stay TUNEd for that. Until then, go inside my mind/ears & enjoy some NOstalgia.

TL & DL after the after…

*PBBT!’S SMORGASBORD FEBRUARY 2011

Sigh…right…so I was sitting…making the comp…and I kept thinking…man…what would I want the.er…ideal…woman to sound like if I had to describe her musically….and this happened. I feel incredibly fluffy making this and I’ll more than likely overcompensate this feeling by making an outlandishly ignorant comp for March. Playlist and shit under the covers. Stop laughing at me.

LUKE VIBERT – BONAFIDE BEATS

Luke muthafunkin’ Vibert! The doode who made one of my favorite tracks that I ever put on a NKD…

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

Well the good folks over @ Bonafide Magazine have been putting out a series entitled Bonafied Beats, and for Vol.6 they called on the talents of Luke Vibert. The schitt is like hoppin in a DeLorean of 1.21 gigawatts to late 98/early 99. In Bonafide’s words…

Fresh from carbonite, the next mix in the Bonafide Beats series is certified vintage, having been in storage since Prince was partying in 1999. Washing up on the silicon shores of Luke Vibert’s hard drive some ten or more years since it was made, this mix captures the vibrancy of underground hip-hop on the cusp of the new millennium. With the ‘golden-era’ fast disappearing in the rear-view mirror, here we see one-time independent outfits such as Company Flow and Slum Village take a breath and prepare to dive deeper, making way for Fiddy and co. to lurch in and plunder all that glamour and gold offered up to the new millennium ‘gangster’ rappers.

*PBBT!’S SMORGASBORD SEPTEMBER 2010

Oh yeah. That just happened. If you think there is any rhyme or reason to this month’s Smorg you’ve lost a little more than you’re marbles. BUT that’s what makes it awesome. This one kinda rides like those random mixtapes/mix cd’s you used to make with whatever song came on the radio/popped up in your head at the time. Fun to make and even more fun to listen to. Now go on down there below the jump and wretch around and wrench it off.

NO KNOWS DOPE | AUGUST 20X

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

Okay so, thus far we have had NKD’s on some str8 up heat to kick start it all, then Dilla, then Beats, then Love , then Stereolab, then Portishead, then we had last months double NKD for Stevie & for this month I had to go with my man Busa Busss!! So many people sleep on Busta Rhymes! I never see him any ANNNNNNNNNNNYBODYS top 10 or top 20 for that matter. I had to dead that by doing a No Knows Busta. 60 pinche tracks! & even THAT was narrowed down. These are just my all time favorite Busta songs of all time. The others will be saved for a sequel somewhere down the road, but for now I think these will suffice. If you’ve always thought like me… then this is FOR YOU! If you sittin’ there reading this like… “really No? Busta?” then stick yo’self Pretty Tony & hit the jump to DL like yesterday!! (my bad for the 1 day delay)

DJ JAZZY JEFF AND MICK BOOGIE PRESENT-SUMMERTIME

I was at a cookout yesterday and Will Smith and Jazzy Jeff’s “Summertime” came on. There really is no such thing as having an event during the season without hearing this and other classic summertime songs. So, right on time for the 4th, Mick Boogie Undrcrwn and Jeff teamed up to create this mixtape with almost 50 hits from De la Soul to Quincy Jones. Audible goodness for days. Check out the tracklist after the jump.
