‘ONE NIGHT IN VEGAS’ WITH TUPAC AND MIKE TYSON

Tonight, on the 14th anniversary of Tupac’s murder, ESPN will premiere Reggie Rock Bythewood’s new documentary One Night In Vegas. Part of the “30 for 30″ documentary series, the film take a look at the friendship between ’Pac and Mike Tyson, as well as the events of that night that saw the boxer’s final championship win and the iconic rapper’s slaying.

Recently, I had the opportunity to chat with Bythewood about the film and the controversial icons:

One night, Mike was going in to the Palladium (night club) in Hollywood. And he sees this little skinny guy fighting with the bouncers, who don’t want to let him in because of how he was dressed. He tells them “Hey, let the little guy in” and it was ’Pac. That’s where their friendship started. The night before the big fight, ‘Pac was in the studio recording a song for Mike’s entrance in to the ring.

TUPAC SHAKUR (6.16.1971 – 9.13.1996)

It’s hard to believe that 11 years ago I was driving on the 101 freeway when I heard on the THEN popular 92.3 The Beat from Air personality Theo that Pac had died. I had the pleasure of meeting Pac a couple of times (no damn cam, all mental memories) and he was always very approachable and chill as fuck! Seriously!! Yesterday marked 11 years since his passing. Many believe he aint dead due to his release’s that still come out to this day or the whole “Suge shot me” conspiracy on “Makaveli“. But let’s not get it twisted… doode is not in hiding. He is and has been dead for the past 11 years.

THis is not a best of… just some songs that I feel were lyrically powerful as well as overall impact a certain song had when it dropped (i.e. “California Love” when that song dropped in Cali, all of Los Angeles felt like it was our time to shine & when Pac signed to Death Row… we did.)

It was short lived as is everything else in Hip Hop.

But Pac’s contribution to the movement and his legacy live on.

Rise In Power Our Brother.
