The queen of everything funky in the UK, Cooly G,  just recently released a single on Hyperdub entitled Up In My Head backed with Phat Si. The unmistakable mixture between sex and dread is notable on Up In My Head. Definitely a huge tune just oozing with steez. On the flip, everything starts to get squashed and tweaked at every chance on Phat Si. It’s a bit nastier and subs just lends to a get up and grind’em bassline. Take a listen, enjoy!

ESTELLE DARLINGS & DJ TRAUMA: #IALMOSTMADEAMIXTAPE

It must be something about the summer. All of these smooth mixtapes keep popping up everywhere. Estelle, the Brit songstress and DJ Trauma collaborated for this set of tracks she’s been wanting the public to hear. Slight late pass on this one because it came out last week, but we were too busy cooking out, pardon!  In her intro she says she wants to be known for more than the woman behind “American Boy.” So here’s her stab at it while we wait on her next album All Eyes on Me. So many people have taken a crack at Weldon Irvine’s “Morning Sunrise” (Hov, Lupe, etc.) and since it’s one of my favorite songs, I appreciate hearing it in various forms. On “Dear London” (she kind of) raps on the beat, paying homage to her hometown. Pretty cool stuff here. Lots of familiar samples. Check it out.

It was hard for me to not react dramatically when I began reading this. As a writer, sometimes I fear that the internet has grown into such a dominant force, that it will cause these kinds of stories to become obsolete. But, like a breath of fresh air, Zoe Chace interviewed people Lauryn Hill has worked with for context and she also got Ms. Hill to talk. VIDEO: QUADRON – HERFRA HVOR VI STAR

LOVE Quadron. You already know that tho. Love em so much we will be having them out here in San Jose (June 11th) via the homie Michael Grammar.

The good folks at Yours Truly linked up with Plug Research’s new Danish duo, Quadron, for a live performance video for the last song of their critically acclaimed self titled album.  The song, entitled “Herfra Hvor Vi Star” was recently shot in Los Angeles, CA and features an intimate portrait of producer Robin and singer Coco with band, demonstrating Robin’s stripped down production, while showcasing Coco’s powerful vocals.  This video came from the rehearsal sessions with Quadron and a live band, so this is also the first time hearing their music being played with this format.

Quadron will also be a part of the annual 2 day UCLA Jazz Reggae Festival, which also features Nas and Damian Marley, Barrington Levy, Q-Tip, Raphael Saadiq, Bilal, Foreign Exchange, Georgia Ann Muldrow and Declaime, and many others.
