FRANCIS AND THE LIGHTS

2611316600_d6a59518aeFrancis and the Lights is like a freakin’ dream come true. Although the name sounds like a title of a Tim Burton film (and the lead singer of the band, Francis Farewell Starlite looks like a character from one), the music is real, and by real I mean real DOPE. I’ve been trying to pin a similar sound on it and the best description I can give is a 21st century Prince/Radiohead mashup. And trust me, that description doesn’t do the music justice. If you listen to the detail of the songs and the instrumentation you begin to really see how spectacular Francis and the Lights really are. Then you throw their new media savvy into the mix and you my friend have found yourself a new Blind I favorite.  Listen to their joint entitled Lime and hit the jump for more streams, info, video, and downloads from Francis and the Lights…

I happened upon the group through Muxtape, one of my favorite innovative sites which recently relaunched after some legal troubles surrounding the streams that the site is based upon. Upon listening to their featured joints, I had to get my Google on and see what else they had, and there was a surprising amount of info and connection to the band, in everything from videos and a super-dope independent website reminiscent of Radiohead’s venture into independent marketing and free music, to a Twitter page where Francis actually posts his bank account transactions in real time (strange, I know, but oddly interesting use of Twitter). It seems as if the group and it’s backing are exploring the opportunities that going independent with great music can afford an artist. And I’m not completely sure if the information on their Wikipedia page is correct, but supposedly they incorporated themselves and accepted a $100,000 investment from the Normative Music Company. The homie Francis supposedly made his first live debut performing The Immortal Otis Redding (download) in it’s entirety. Are you interested yet? Partake in some media and prepare to tweak:
